Description
Dr. Hell is a German-born scientist who serves as the primary antagonist in Mazinger Z: Infinity. A genius in fields such as biochemistry and robotics, his background is rooted in a World War II-era expedition to the island of Bardos alongside Professor Juzo Kabuto. It was there that they discovered the ruins of the ancient Mycenaean Empire, including powerful humanoid weapons known as Mechanical Beasts. While Professor Kabuto would use this technology to create the super-robot Mazinger Z as a force for peace, Dr. Hell seized the technology for himself, slaughtering the other researchers and establishing a secret base from which to launch his global conquest. By the time of the film Infinity, set ten years after his apparent death, he has been resurrected and returns to menace the world once more.

In Infinity, Dr. Hell's personality and motivations reveal layers beyond simple megalomania. While on the surface he embodies the archetypal mad scientist, bent on ruling the world through overwhelming force, the film provides a more complex perspective. The protagonist, Koji Kabuto, theorizes that Dr. Hell never genuinely sought to rule the world for its own sake. Instead, his plan to use the ancient giant robot Infinity is framed as a grand experiment driven by pure curiosity. He declares the current world unworthy of existence and seeks to use Infinity's ultimate weapon, Goragon, to overwrite reality with a different parallel universe, not for any practical benefit, but to observe the outcome. Despite this cold and detached scientific curiosity, he retains a distinct sense of playfulness, often taking great delight in unveiling his bizarre new machines and weapons to his bewildered subordinates. He also displays a humane and almost paternalistic side to his loyal followers, often forgiving their failures, particularly those of Baron Asura, and showing genuine distress at the thought of their deaths.

Dr. Hell's role in the story is the catalyst for the film's conflict. He reappears ten years after his defeat, launching a sudden global assault. His plan begins with a raid on a photonic power plant in Texas, where he captures the pilot Tetsuya Tsurugi and the robot Great Mazinger. This act is a necessary step to seize the colossal robot Infinity, which was recently excavated from Mount Fuji. Unable to use Infinity's intended control unit, a girl named Lisa, Dr. Hell improvises by using his captured foes as an activation key. He establishes a fortress around Infinity on Mount Fuji, using a captured Great Mazinger to siphon photonic energy to power the Goragon. As the world's forces scramble to respond, Dr. Hell buys time for his doomsday device to activate, personally piloting a powerful robotic form known as the Great Marshal of Hell to fend off any attackers.

The character's key relationships are central to his organization. He is the creator and master of his three chief lieutenants: Baron Asura, Count Brocken, and Viscount Pigman. His dynamic with them is complex; he punishes them for their failures but also displays a notable degree of patience and care, suggesting he values them as more than mere tools. This is in stark contrast to his relationship with the Kabuto family. He views the late Professor Juzo Kabuto as the only man who could rival him, and by extension, his grandson Koji Kabuto, the pilot of Mazinger Z, is his archenemy, the primary obstacle to his ambitions.

In terms of development, Dr. Hell's resurrection for Infinity represents a significant change from his original fate. His motives have shifted from pure world conquest to a more abstract and experimental goal. His defeat in this story is also definitive. In the final battle, after Mazinger Z is supercharged by the world's photon energy and grows to a massive size, Dr. Hell is punched into space inside Infinity by a final, powerful Rocket Punch, leading to his destruction.

Dr. Hell possesses several notable abilities. While primarily a scientific genius who can create, modify, and control armies of Mechanical Beasts, he is also a capable combatant. He wields the Bardos Wand, a staff that among other functions, can control his creations and project non-lethal energy beams. In his Great Marshal of Hell form, he is a physically powerful fighter who can go toe-to-toe with Mazinger Z. The scars on his body, visible in close-up shots, are evidence of his previous death and resurrection, suggesting he has returned in a body that recalls his original form after a period as the more powerful Great Marshall of Hell seen in previous series.
