Description
Junpei Hyuga is a second-year student at Seirin High School and serves as the captain of the boys' basketball team, where he plays as the shooting guard. He stands at 178 cm tall and weighs 68 kg. In his first year, he had long, bleached blond hair and an arrogant expression in an attempt to look like a delinquent after deciding to quit basketball. However, he later returned to his natural short, dark brown hair and is consistently seen wearing glasses. His family runs a barbershop, and he has some knowledge of cutting hair.

During middle school, Hyuga played basketball alongside his friend Shun Izuki. Despite practicing intensively at the Aida Sports Gym, his team was very weak and failed to win a single match, leaving him traumatized and full of self-blame. This losing record, contrasted with the overwhelming strength of the Generation of Miracles, caused him to develop a deep hatred for basketball, leading him to swear off the sport upon entering high school. On his first day at Seirin, he met Teppei Kiyoshi, who was immediately friendly and persistently tried to convince Hyuga to help him start a new basketball club. After much pestering and seeing Kiyoshi's sincerity, Hyuga reluctantly agreed to rejoin the sport he had grown to hate. It was then that Kiyoshi proposed Hyuga as the team's captain, a position he was pressured into but eventually grew to fill with responsibility.

On the surface, Hyuga is often perceived as a calm, polite, and collected individual. However, when irritated or during high-pressure moments in a game, he reveals a true nature that is brash, rude, and provocatively sharp-tongued, often calling people idiots. This side of him fully emerges when he enters what is known as "clutch mode". In this state, he becomes heated and arrogant, cracking his neck as a sign of confidence. This personality shift is linked directly to his improved performance, as he channels his aggression into a cold, unwavering focus on scoring. Hyuga is the mental pillar of Seirin, acting as the team's emotional anchor and never losing confidence in tough situations. He takes great pride in his role as an upperclassman and is not afraid to take control of the game or reprimand his teammates, including ace Taiga Kagami, when necessary.

His primary motivation stems from a promise made with Kiyoshi to win the national championship, especially after Kiyoshi suffered a serious knee injury. As captain, he is driven to lead Seirin to the top, carrying the team on his shoulders as one of its main scoring threats, earning the nickname of the "clutch shooter". In the story, Hyuga acts as a steadying force for the younger players like Kagami and Tetsuya Kuroko, providing leadership and experience. He is a central figure in Seirin's journey through the Interhigh and Winter Cup tournaments, often being the player who breaks the team out of scoring slumps with his three-point shooting.

Hyuga shares a close, long-standing friendship with point guard Shun Izuki, having attended the same middle school and joined Seirin together. He strongly trusts Izuki as the "control tower" of the team, even if he constantly tells him to shut up because of his bad puns. His relationship with Teppei Kiyoshi is complex; while Hyuga bluntly claims to hate Kiyoshi for dragging him back into basketball, he views him as a benefactor and feels a deep, natural pull towards him. They form a formidable inside-outside duo, described as the "legs" of the team. Coach Riko Aida is a close friend and former middle school teammate. There are numerous hints throughout the series suggesting Hyuga has romantic feelings for her, though their relationship remains that of close friends and colleagues.

Hyuga's development is defined by his return to basketball and his maturation as a captain. Initially pressured into the role, he evolved into a calm, dependable leader capable of rallying his team even in the most desperate situations. He conquered his past insecurities and trauma associated with losing, transforming his anger into a weapon on the court. His growth is also shown through his skills, as he learns new techniques and, in the finals against Rakuzan, manages to overcome and even copy the shots of Reo Mibuchi, an Uncrowned King he once admired.

Hyuga is a renowned sharpshooter known for his three-pointers, which have a high success rate. His shooting form is inspired by Reo Mibuchi, as his attempt to mimic NBA player Ray Allen proved unsuccessful. His most notable trait is being a clutch player; when the tension of a match rises, his personality flips, and his concentration and shooting accuracy significantly increase, with his shots seeming guaranteed to go in. As a shooting guard, his weaknesses include a lack of speed and poor dribbling skills, making him vulnerable to steals. To train his mental fortitude, he undertook a harsh regimen where he had to break one of his treasured Japanese warrior figurines for every shot he missed in practice. He learned a technique called the Barrier Jumper from Riko's father, Kagetora Aida, which is a quick jab step away from the goal followed by a fast, hard-to-block jump shot that relies on a player's center of gravity. During the Winter Cup finals, he demonstrated his growth by copying Reo Mibuchi's "Earth" shooting form.
