Description
Kenichi Hino, known in the English adaptation as Mr. Match, is a prominent character in the MegaMan NT Warrior anime. He is the operator of the Fire-type NetNavis TorchMan and later HeatMan. True to his fiery motif, Kenichi has red hair that falls to his shoulders and black eyes, giving him a distinctive and energetic appearance. His nickname in the Japanese version, Hinoken, is a playful combination of his surname and the word for "fire."

Kenichi's personality is intensely passionate and hot-headed, directly reflecting the Fire-type NetNavis he commands. He has a very short temper and possesses a fiery passion that drives his actions. In the early part of the series, he is a dedicated arsonist for the criminal organization World Three, displaying a persistent and vengeful nature as he vows to defeat the protagonist, Lan Hikari, and his NetNavi, MegaMan. He is a showman at heart, and is also a skilled fire dancer, often taking vacations to tropical locations to put on performances.

His motivations evolve significantly over the course of the story. Initially, he is driven by a desire to cause chaos and to prove his strength by defeating MegaMan, feeling a deep need to reignite his "burning passion" after early defeats. As an agent of World Three, his goal is to follow the orders of his leader, Mr. Wily, and disrupt both the real and cyber worlds. However, after the fall of World Three, his motivations shift. While he and his fellow agents secretly wish for the return of Mr. Wily and the revival of their organization, Kenichi becomes a more law-abiding citizen. He takes on the role of a delivery man for Number 1 Curry, a restaurant opened by his comrade Yahoot. In this new phase of life, he becomes a civil, if still temperamental, character who aids Lan and his friends on several occasions, serving them at the restaurant and ultimately becoming an ally.

Kenichi's role in the story is multi-faceted. He serves as the first villain that Lan and MegaMan face, setting the stage for their heroic journey. Throughout the World Three arc, he is a persistent antagonist, challenging the heroes in the N1 Grand Prix tournament with a strategy to overheat the arena using solar panels. After the World Three disbands, his role shifts to that of a supporting character and occasional ally. For instance, after TorchMan is deleted by the villain FreezeMan, Kenichi works with Mr. Famous to revive him into a new form, HeatMan. He later assists Lan in fighting the Darkloid VineMan, providing a tracking signal and ultimately fighting alongside MegaMan to delete the enemy.

His key relationships are central to his character. His most important bond is with his NetNavis, whom he treats as valued partners and allies rather than mere tools, showing a level of care not always seen in other operators. He has a close, often bickering, camaraderie with his fellow former World Three agents: the elegant Maddy, the bombastic Count Zap, and the mystical Yahoot. These three become his co-workers and partners in their reformed lives, even as they share a nostalgic longing for their criminal pasts. His relationship with Lan Hikari evolves from bitter enmity to a grudging respect and eventual friendship, as Lan regularly visits the curry restaurant.

Kenichi Hino shows a clear character development from a dedicated villain to a reformed citizen and ally. While his fiery temper and pride never fully disappear, he channels his energy away from criminal arson and toward legitimate work and assisting the heroes against greater threats. Notably, unlike his video game counterpart who returns to a life of crime, the anime version of Kenichi remains on the path of a law-abiding, if reluctant, member of society, though he holds onto the ambition of one day reviving World Three alongside his friends.

His notable abilities are tied to his specialization. As an operator, he is highly skilled in using Fire-type Battle Chips and strategies to maximize his NetNavi's power in combat. He is capable of devising complex plans, such as using viruses to manipulate an arena's environmental controls to empower TorchMan. Beyond Net Battling, his talents include fire dancing, a real-world skill that complements his online persona. His partnership with his NetNavis is also a key ability, as he successfully transitioned from operating TorchMan to HeatMan, showing his adaptability and strong connection to his digital partners.
