Description
Mamoru Takamura is the deuteragonist of Hajime no Ippo, a multi-weight class professional boxer affiliated with the Kamogawa Boxing Gym. He currently holds the WBC super middleweight championship and has previously been the unified WBC junior middleweight champion as well as the WBC and WBA middleweight champion. His ultimate goal is to become a world champion in six weight classes, from junior middleweight all the way up to heavyweight, a quest that drives his entire career.

Takamura was discovered on the streets by Coach Genji Kamogawa, who recognized his raw potential. Even before formal training, Takamura possessed exceptional speed, agility, power, and stamina from a lifetime of street brawling. Under Kamogawa's guidance, these natural gifts were refined into world-class boxing technique. He stands 185 centimeters tall with a reach of 189 centimeters and a natural weight of around 200 pounds, meaning he must endure severe weight cuts to compete in lower divisions.

His personality is loud, brash, and often vulgar. He refers to himself with the grandiose suffix Ore-sama, constantly boasts about his abilities, and shows little sympathy for defeated opponents. He enjoys playing pranks on his gym mates, particularly Masaru Aoki, and rarely misses an opportunity to mock or belittle others. Despite this abrasive exterior, there are moments when his genuine kindness and loyalty break through, earning him the deep respect of those around him. He is fiercely protective of his gym and his friends, and his tough-love approach to mentoring stems from a sincere desire to see them improve.

Takamura’s role in the story is central; he is the one who introduces the protagonist, Ippo Makunouchi, to boxing and serves as his primary mentor. He also acts as a senior figure to Aoki and Tatsuya Kimura, often driving them to train harder through ridicule and challenge. His relationship with Coach Kamogawa is one of mutual respect, with Takamura seeking his guidance during difficult fights. Although he constantly teases his gym mates, his unrivaled strength and occasional displays of care prevent them from losing respect for him.

His development over the series shows a gradual maturing as he faces increasingly dangerous opponents. Early on, his arrogance almost costs him matches when he becomes fixated on scoring a one-hit knockout. Later, he learns to balance his aggression with tactical patience. He struggles with weight control, which slightly reduces his stamina in fights fought below his natural weight. A recurring physical concern is a possible detached retina in his right eye, which has been exploited by opponents like David Eagle and Keith Bison, though it has never been definitively confirmed in the story.

Takamura’s fighting ability is extraordinary. He is a hybrid boxer who can adopt orthodox, brawling, or hitman styles depending on the situation. He possesses genius-level boxing intellect, able to read opponents mid-fight and devise counter-strategies. Unlike many characters in the series, he does not have a single signature finishing blow; instead, every punch he throws carries knockout power. He has never lost a professional fight, with all twenty-seven victories coming by way of knockout. His nickname, the Japanese Hawk, references the character for taka in his name and is often used by announcers during his world title matches. His signature pompadour hairstyle is a defining visual trait.
