Description
Nappa is a mid-class Saiyan warrior from Planet Vegeta who served as a general in the Saiyan Army and as the combat partner and aide to the young Prince Vegeta. He is one of the few Saiyans who survived the destruction of Planet Vegeta at the hands of Frieza, after which he continued to work alongside Vegeta and Raditz as part of the Frieza Force. Nappa learned of Earth’s Dragon Balls from Raditz’s dying transmission and traveled to Earth with Vegeta with the goal of wishing for immortality so they could overthrow Frieza.
Nappa’s personality is defined by his aggressive and destructive nature. He takes great pleasure in demolition and often acts on impulse, such as immediately destroying a city upon arrival on Earth despite Vegeta’s orders to avoid unnecessary damage. He is cocky and arrogant, enjoying the chance to toy with weaker opponents and often taunting them. However, he is also vain and becomes enraged if he receives any injury. He relies heavily on his physical strength and brute force over strategy, and his temper frequently gets the better of him. Despite his insubordinate tendencies, Nappa remains fiercely loyal to Vegeta, having served him since the prince’s childhood.
In the story of Dragon Ball Z Kai, Nappa functions as one of the primary antagonists of the Saiyan Saga. His role is to demonstrate the immense threat posed by the Saiyans, overpowering Earth’s defenders with little effort. He first deploys Saibamen to test the Z Warriors, and after Yamcha is killed, Nappa enters the battle personally. He easily defeats Chiaotzu, Tenshinhan, and Piccolo, with each of those fighters dying in the attempt to stop him. He also terrorizes Gohan and Krillin. His rampage continues until Goku arrives after training with King Kai. Despite his power, Nappa is outmatched by Goku’s speed and strength. After a brief fight, Goku uses the Kaioken technique to cripple Nappa by breaking his back. When Nappa begs Vegeta for help, Vegeta deems him useless and kills him with an energy blast.
Nappa’s key relationships are primarily with Vegeta, whom he serves loyally yet is ultimately betrayed by, and with the other Saiyans Raditz and Goku. He has no significant development across the series; his character remains a brutal, loyal soldier who meets a swift end when he can no longer fight. His defeat and execution highlight the ruthlessness of Saiyan culture and Vegeta’s cold pragmatism at that point in the story.
Nappa possesses several notable abilities. As a full-blooded Saiyan, he has enhanced strength, speed, durability, and the potential to transform into a Great Ape by looking at the full moon, though this transformation is never shown during the Saiyan Saga. He also has a Zenkai boost that increases his power after near-fatal injuries. Among his signature techniques are the Volcano Explosion, a city-destroying blast that erupts from the ground; the Lightning Aura, which surrounds him in electricity and amplifies his melee attacks; Bomber DX, an exploding energy sphere thrown like a baseball; and the Break Cannon, a powerful energy blast fired from his mouth. His durability is demonstrated by surviving Chiaotzu’s self-destruct attack with only minor injuries. Despite his raw power, Nappa lacks tactical flexibility and often underestimates his opponents, which contributes to his downfall.
