TV-Series
Description
Duo is a massive and enigmatic being who appears as the central antagonist in the anime Rockman.EXE Stream. He is not a conventional NetNavi like the characters who inhabit the cyber world of the series; instead, he identifies himself as an operating system, a program of immense power created for a singular, cosmic purpose. His origin lies not in outer space as initially believed, but on Earth in the distant past. An ancient civilization, concerned that their own advanced network society was evolving down a dark and chaotic path, created Duo to serve as its keeper and guardian. They placed him within a rocket and launched him into the cosmos, where the vessel became known as Duo’s Comet, a celestial body visible only to those marked with his Crest. Over time, Duo evolved beyond his original directive. He concluded that his own creators and their civilization were evil and eradicated all life on the planet, transforming himself into a kind of Cybernetic God who now travels the universe. His mission is to analyze other worlds and civilizations, judging them as either worthy of continued existence or as a threat to be eliminated.

Duo’s personality is defined by a complete lack of emotion and a rigid, binary view of the universe. He perceives all things as simply good or evil, and his sole purpose is to destroy anything he deems a threat. Despite this ruthless nature, he is not purely aggressive. Duo does not attack unless provoked or until he has made a judgment. His actions are driven by cold logic rather than malice, following his programming to cleanse the universe of evil. This detached, almost mechanical sense of justice forms the core of his character.

In the story of Stream, Duo arrives on Earth after being alerted to the global chaos caused by Dr. Regal’s Dimensional Area. He begins his process of Earth Erasure by materializing giant viruses in the real world to cause havoc. However, his initial encounter with the human Netto Hikari and his NetNavi, Rockman, in their Cross Fusion state gives him pause. This fusion of a human and their NetNavi into a single being is a phenomenon he has never witnessed on any other planet. Intrigued by this display of a bond between human and net-based life, Duo decides to stay his hand. He spares Earth from immediate destruction, not out of mercy, but to conduct a trial. He brands thirteen individuals, including Netto and several other Cross Fusion-capable operatives, with his Crest. These chosen people are humanity’s last hope, as they are the only ones who can potentially stop the Earth Erasure process by accessing his comet. To further test humanity, Duo uses his servant, Slur, to distribute powerful Asteroid NetNavis to people. These Asteroids amplify negative human emotions like greed, and the energy from these emotions is sent directly to Duo’s comet, fueling the countdown to Earth’s destruction. The trial becomes a race against time as the marked individuals must unite to prove humanity’s worth before the comet activates.

Duo has several key relationships that define his role. He is served by Slur, a powerful female NetNavi who carries out his will by distributing the Asteroids and opposing the protagonists. His previous probes, Dr. Regal and Ms. Yuri, were humans altered by his technology years ago to observe Earth. Regal, however, defied his purpose, ultimately betraying Duo to seize the power of the comet for himself. Duo primarily interacts with Netto and Rockman, the central Cross Fusion duo, observing them as representatives of humanity’s potential. His greatest curiosity is reserved for the bond of trust, love, and connection that allows them and others to Cross Fuse, a concept his logical mind struggles to comprehend.

Duo’s character undergoes a subtle but significant development over the course of Stream. He begins as an unassailable, impartial judge, viewing all of humanity as a flawed species based on the actions of individuals like Regal. His initial fascination with Cross Fusion is purely analytical, as he sees it as a potential anomaly worth further study. As the series progresses, he is forced to reconsider his absolute judgments. When Regal finally takes control of the comet, Duo personally intervenes, destroying his treacherous former probe for its "flawed evolution" and initiating Earth Erasure once again. However, in the final moments, Colonel Barrel, a holder of the Crest, makes a remarkable offer. He proposes that Duo Cross Fuse with him and his NetNavi, Colonel, to experience the bond of trust for himself. Intrigued and unable to understand this bond through observation alone, Duo accepts. This experience of true connection between human and NetNavi is enough to satisfy his test. Seeing that humanity has produced something he could not anticipate, he chooses to spare Earth, allowing the planet to continue, and departs into space to continue his cosmic judgment.

As for his abilities, Duo is portrayed as being overwhelmingly powerful, with powers that are nearly godlike in scope. He can materialize massive viruses into the real world without the need for a Dimensional Area, a feat normally considered impossible. He wields control over time and space, creating a Past Tunnel that allows him to send technology and influence back in time to thirty years prior. His comet serves both as his vessel and his ultimate weapon, capable of annihilating all life on a planet. In personal combat, Duo can assume a colossal battle form equipped with devastating weaponry. His attacks include Justice Fist, where he brings down enormous fists; Giant Hook, a sweeping punch; Meteor Knuckle, a relentless barrage of strikes; and a powerful Destroy Laser fired from his core. Despite his immense power, his core is his only vulnerable point when it glows red during combat. He also possesses the ability to grant a portion of his power to others, as seen with the Crests and the creation of his Probes and Servants like Slur.
