Description
Hikaru Shidou, known as Lucy in several international adaptations, is the protagonist of the animated series Magic Knight Rayearth. She is a fourteen-year-old eighth-grade student with bright red eyes and scarlet hair, which appears pink in the original manga and later reboot. Shidou is small for her age and is often teased for her boyish appearance and demeanor. She comes from a family that runs a kendo school, and she helps her parents and three older brothers, Masaru, Satoru, and Kakeru, with the dojo.
Her personality is characterized by bravery, cheerfulness, and a spirited, affectionate nature. She has a tomboyish disposition and becomes easily excited by small things. Shidou possesses the strongest will among the three Magic Knights and is described as innocent and empathetic, yet she shows immense bravery and skill in kendo. At times, she can appear childish, but she is fiercely loyal to her friends and very protective of them. Despite her occasional naivety, she is determined and headstrong, never giving up without a fight.
Shidou’s primary motivation at the start of the story is to return to her world; she is summoned to the magical land of Cephiro alongside two other girls, Umi Ryuuzaki and Fuu Hououji, to rescue the Pillar, Princess Emeraude. Her personal motivation in the first arc is particularly driven by her desire to go home to her beloved dog, Hikari, whom she considers a precious childhood friend. As the story progresses, her motivations evolve into a deeper sense of responsibility for Cephiro and its people.
As the Knight of Fire, Shidou is the central figure among the three Magic Knights. She takes on the role of the leader due to her passionate and determined nature. Throughout the first season, she and her companions train, fight, and uncover the tragic truth behind the Pillar system. In the second season, she becomes a key figure in the struggle for a new Pillar, ultimately chosen as the new Pillar herself. However, Shidou rejects the idea that Cephiro should depend on one person’s self-sacrifice, and she uses her power to dismantle the Pillar system, allowing Cephiro to function independently.
Her key relationships include her deep bonds with Umi and Fuu, who become her closest friends and allies. She also develops a close friendship with the spirit-creature Mokona. In the second season, she falls in love with Lantis, a warrior from another world, and becomes friends with Eagle Vision of Autozam. Her innocent and affectionate nature leads her to care deeply for everyone she meets, and her interactions with her adversaries often reflect a desire for understanding rather than conflict.
Shidou undergoes significant development over the course of the series. Initially a somewhat naive and impulsive girl, she matures into a thoughtful and resolute leader. She learns to trust her instincts, rely on her friends, and make difficult decisions for the greater good. Her final act of destroying the Pillar system demonstrates her growth into someone who questions authority and seeks a more equitable future.
Notable abilities include her training in kendo, which makes her physically formidable in close combat. As a Magic Knight, she wields the element of fire, casting spells such as Arrow of Fire and Crimson Lightning. She also pilots the Rune God Rayearth, a wolf-like mechanical entity with a mane of fire, which she summons to fight large-scale battles. Her magical prowess grows throughout the story, and she becomes one of the most powerful beings in Cephiro. Her theme color is red, reflecting her passionate and fiery nature.
