Description
Luce, also known as Hikaru Shidou in the original Japanese, is the main protagonist of Magic Knight Rayearth 2. She is an eighth‑grade student from Tokyo who lives with her mother and three older brothers, Masaru, Satoru, and Kakeru. Her father, a kendo instructor, left on a training journey after she defeated him in a match during her childhood. Hikaru is small for her age and has scarlet hair and bright red eyes. Her personality is brave, cheerful, spirited, affectionate, and humble, with a tomboyish disposition. She is innocent and empathetic, yet possesses immense bravery and strong willpower. She often shows a childish side but is fiercely loyal to her friends.
In the second season, Hikaru returns to Cephiro a year after the traumatic events of the first series, carrying deep guilt over the death of Princess Emeraude. She is no longer as carefree as before; her joy has been tempered by what she was forced to do. Still, she remains determined and honorable. She becomes the Knight of Fire, wielding fire‑based spells such as Arrow of Fire and Crimson Lightning. Her magical mecha is Rayearth, a wolf‑like Mashin of flames, which she pilots into battle.
Hikaru’s motivation shifts from wanting to return home to protecting Cephiro and finding a way to save the world without repeating the cycle of sacrifice. She develops romantic feelings for Lantis, the brooding younger brother of the late Zagato, and also forms a close friendship with Eagle Vision, the leader of Autozam, who becomes both a rival and an ally.
Her role in the story is central: she defends Cephiro from invaders from Autozam, Chizeta, and Fahren, and ultimately becomes a candidate to become the new Pillar of Cephiro. Refusing to let the world rely on a single person’s suffering, she uses her power as Pillar to abolish the Pillar system entirely, allowing Cephiro to function on its own.
Key relationships include her unwavering bond with fellow Magic Knights Umi Ryuuzaki and Fuu Hououji, her growing affection for Lantis, and her complex friendship with Eagle. She also earns the respect of former enemies like Ascot and Alcyone, who become allies. Her notable abilities extend beyond magic; she is a skilled kendo practitioner, which gives her formidable swordsmanship, and she can summon Rayearth for large‑scale combat.
Throughout Magic Knight Rayearth 2, Hikaru matures from a naive, energetic girl into a resolute young woman who understands that true strength lies in believing in oneself and in others, and who is willing to sacrifice her own dreams for the greater good.
