Jūrōta Kosugi
Description
Jūrōta Kosugi is a prominent Japanese voice actor and narrator born on December 19, 1957, in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture. He is affiliated with the talent management firm Ohsawa Jimusho. A graduate of the broadcasting department at Nihon University's College of Art, his path to becoming a voice actor was not a direct one. Initially aspiring to be a doctor, his interest in voice acting was sparked in high school after watching a Western film. After university, he spent about four years working as a salaryman for the Shochiku film company, handling business duties for the famous "Otoko wa Tsurai yo" (It's Tough Being a Man) series. His entry into the industry came when a friend invited him to narrate a commercial for a board game, leading him to pursue voice work seriously.
Kosugi's career began in 1985 with his debut role as Henken Bekkner in the influential anime "Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam". He initially balanced his voice acting work with his job at Shochiku before committing to the profession full-time. His voice is characterized as a low, rich, and versatile baritone. This distinctive quality has allowed him to portray a wide spectrum of characters, from mature and稳重 (steady) adults and noble figures to卑劣 (despicable) villains and comedic roles, a versatility that has led fans to joke that "Kosugi Jūrōta's acting troupe" must exist.
Throughout his extensive career, Kosugi has brought to life many memorable characters. In the 1980s, he voiced Rajura, one of the Mashō (demon generals), in "Legendary Armor Samurai Troopers". He has also taken on roles such as Manu in "The Demonic Beast Front," Tetsugen Daitō in both "Sin Karate Jigokuhen: Kessen no Kado" and "Sin Karate Jigokuhen: Chi no Mokushiroku," and Mikado in "Hello Kitty's The Bamboo Princess". In the OVA "Yebisu Celebrities 1st," he played the role of Takashi Daijō. In the series "Showa Aho Zhoshi Akanuke Ichiban!," he is credited as Michinari Okushiga.
Kosugi is also widely recognized for several long-running and iconic roles. He is well-known as the voice of Asuma Sarutobi in the global hit "Naruto" and its sequel "Naruto: Shippūden". He has a long history with the "Kindaiichi Case Files" franchise, voicing Inspector Takeru Kengo for many years, sometimes under the pseudonym Kyōsuke Sugita. His role as the villain Arlong in "One Piece" is another fan-favorite performance. In addition to anime, he has a significant presence in video games, most notably as the voice of the powerful warlord Oda Nobunaga in Koei Tecmo's "Samurai Warriors" (Sengoku Musou) series.
Kosugi has several notable professional relationships and recurring collaborations. He has been a close friend of fellow voice actor Ken'yū Horiuchi since they were high school classmates at Zushi Kaisei High School. The two have even held a live talk event together called "Kenjū Talk Live". His distinctive voice has also made him the go-to Japanese dub-over artist for Western actors, notably as the primary voice for Daniel Craig's James Bond and for David Duchovny's Fox Mulder in "The X-Files".
