TV-Series
Description
Francesco di Medici holds several powerful titles within the Vatican, serving as the Minister of the Inquisition, the Secretary of the Vatican Papal Doctrine, and the Commander of the Vatican Army. He is also known as the Duke of Florence and Tuscany. As a cardinal and a leading member of the College of Cardinals, he is the older half-brother to the young and impressionable Pope Alessandro XVIII. He is the son of the previous pontiff, Pope Gregorio XXX, but was born illegitimate, a fact that carries significant weight in his life and ambitions.

This illegitimate birth is the source of deep-seated bitterness for Francesco, as it bars him from ever being elected to the papacy himself. His personality is marked by a forceful and intimidating demeanor, frequently using loud vocal displays to pressure his younger half-brother, the Pope, into agreement. He is a staunch hawk and a radical extremist, holding an intense and unwavering hatred for vampires, referred to within the series as Methuselah. This hatred shapes his entire worldview and political strategy. Francesco prefers violence and military force as the only solution, despising compromise and diplomacy. He is described as an excellent domestic administrator, contrasting sharply with his half-sister, Cardinal Caterina Sforza, who is the gifted diplomat.

Francesco’s primary motivation is the complete and utter annihilation of vampires, often justifying extreme measures as being done in the name of God. However, his actions are also driven by a thirst for power and his own personal desires. He does not hesitate to make decisions that would result in the deaths of innocent people, and in his fanaticism, he believes the afterlife would excuse any sin committed in this holy cause.

Within the story, Francesco serves as a major antagonist and a constant source of internal conflict for the Vatican. His role is largely defined by his opposition to Caterina Sforza and her organization, AX, which seeks a path of negotiation and coexistence with the Methuselah Empire. Their power struggle is a central political dynamic of the series, making her his most persistent and formidable rival. He also has a manipulative and domineering relationship with his half-brother, the Pope, whom he treats as a puppet ruler who lacks the confidence to defy him. Francesco commands the Department of Inquisition, a powerful and feared organization often called the Hammer of God, which is dedicated to hunting heretics and vampires and frequently interferes in the missions of AX to ensure their hardline doctrines are followed.

In terms of development, Francesco remains a consistent ideological obstacle throughout the narrative. There are hints, however, that his extremist path could lead to catastrophic consequences for the Vatican if left unchecked. A key figure in his faction is his trusted subordinate, Brother Petros, the head of the Inquisition, who, despite being a religious fanatic, possesses a strong sense of personal honor and respect for the papal office. This suggests that Francesco's ability to maintain absolute control may have limits, as someone as devout as Petros might eventually rebel against orders that conflict with his core beliefs.

Francesco di Medici is based at the Vatican in Rome. While he does not typically engage in personal combat, his notable abilities lie in his political acumen and command structure. As the head of the Inquisition and commander of the Vatican Army, he wields immense institutional power, controlling a vast military force and intelligence network that he uses to enforce his will and pursue his genocidal agenda against vampires.
