Description
Elegen is a Hyper-Zoanoid, a type of advanced biological weapon, serving the clandestine organization known as Chronos. He is a member of an elite unit called Hyper-Zoanoid Team Five, a squad of powerful beings created to be among the strongest enforcers for the Zoalords, the leaders of Chronos. As his name and abilities suggest, Elegen is designed as an electrical bio-condenser type, with his entire body structured around the generation and discharge of high-voltage electricity. His physical design takes clear inspiration from the electric eel, most notably in his transformed state, lending him a sleek, serpentine, and somewhat otherworldly appearance.
In his human form, Elegen appears as a tall, slender Caucasian male who is completely bald, an unremarkable appearance that allows him to blend into human society when necessary. When he activates his zoanoid form, his appearance becomes distinctly inhuman. He takes on a tall and skinny physique with a long, elongated neck. His skin is a purple hue, and he lacks visible pupils or irises, having only white sclera. The most prominent features of his combat form are the six long, whip-like tentacles that extend from his back, with the two longest attached to a skirt-like protuberance at his lower back. His body also features several sub-battery-like protrusions that glow with energy as he charges and unleashes his electrical powers.
Elegen is portrayed as a capable and dangerous fighter who carries himself with a degree of confidence befitting an elite operative. While information on his deeper personality is limited, his role on the team suggests he is a disciplined soldier who follows orders. He is not depicted as the powerhouse of the group in terms of raw physical strength, but rather as a tactical asset whose unique abilities serve a specific purpose. He seems to understand his own limitations, looking to his stronger, more durable teammate ZX-Tole for support when a situation escalates beyond his capacity for close-quarters combat.
Within the narrative of The Guyver, Elegen serves as a significant obstacle for the protagonist, Sho Fukamachi, who bonds with the Guyver Unit. Elegen and Team Five are deployed to eliminate the Guyver threat. His electrical powers prove to be uniquely effective against the Guyver, as the high-voltage surge can disrupt the connection between the bio-boosted armor and its host, forcing the armor to disengage. This ability makes him one of the few enemies who can directly counter the Guyver's defenses.
Elegen’s key relationships are primarily with the other members of Team Five, especially his leader, ZX-Tole. There is a sense of loyalty and camaraderie among them, as they were created and trained as a single, cohesive unit. His role is to support his comrades, using his electrical whips to attack enemy weak points and disrupt their systems, while relying on the others for physical protection.
The character’s development and ultimate fate differ significantly between the manga and its two anime adaptations. In the original 1989 OVA series, Elegen is mortally wounded in a fight against Guyver I. In his dying moments, he makes a conscious and selfless decision to aid his leader. He begs ZX-Tole to absorb his remaining bio-energy to become more powerful and avenge their fallen team. ZX-Tole reluctantly agrees, draining Elegen’s power and transforming into a stronger, golden-colored "ultimate" state.
In the manga and the 2005 television series which more closely follows it, Elegen meets a very different end. He is the first member of Team Five to be killed, not by the Guyver, but by the rogue Hyper-Zoanoid Aptom. After a battle, a severely damaged Aptom ambushes Elegen and slowly absorbs him, integrating Elegen’s biological structure and electrical abilities into his own ever-evolving form.
Elegen’s notable abilities all revolve around the generation and manipulation of bio-electricity. His body functions as a living battery of immense power, capable of producing a maximum discharge of two million volts. He channels this electricity through the six long, flexible tentacles on his back, which he uses as electrified whips. These tentacles are designed to crack at the weakest points of an enemy’s defenses, such as the joints in armor, delivering a powerful shock that can stun or destroy. When he reaches his maximum electrical output, Elegen can achieve a form of flight or levitation, an ability referred to as the Ionocraft Effect, which uses the Earth’s electromagnetic field. He also possesses a high tolerance for heat and is resistant to flames and fire-based attacks. Furthermore, he can function as a symbiotic battery, capable of recharging the bio-blasters of his teammate ZX-Tole or, in one adaptation, allowing his own energy to be absorbed to power up another.
