Movie
Description
Alexei Dinoia serves as Commandant of the Imperial Knights, the highest-ranking officer within this imperial military branch. He commands the Royal Guard, functioning as his personal brigade under official auspices. Alexei gained entry into the Knights by winning a prestigious tournament during the previous Emperor's reign, launching his ascent through the ranks. His early career cultivated a reputation for strong ideals, dedication to justice, and rigorous research into blastia technology and imperial secrets, driven by a desire to improve the world. This earned him widespread respect from knights and civilians.
Exposure to systemic injustice and corruption eroded Alexei's idealism. This culminated in a pivotal traumatic event: witnessing Imperial Council members deliberately cause the deaths of knights under his command using a blastia explosion. This pushed him past a breaking point, fundamentally altering his worldview. He concluded the existing structures were irredeemable, believing only a complete purge of societal "scum" followed by absolute control under his leadership could achieve true reform. This shift led him to pursue increasingly extreme measures, including extensive, unethical blastia experimentation. During the Great War, he implanted blastia to replace the hearts of fallen soldiers like Yeager and Schwann Oltorain, reviving them to serve his agenda. Schwann, later known as Raven, ultimately betrayed him.
In *Tales of Vesperia: The First Strike*, Alexei appears in consolidated power during an incident involving abnormal aer emissions near Shizontania. When Flynn Scifo, representing Captain Niren, requests reinforcements to address the crisis and protect the town, Alexei refuses the appeal during a formal gathering at the imperial capital. This dismissal demonstrates his prioritization of political protocol or internal agendas over immediate humanitarian or strategic needs, reflecting his growing detachment and authoritarian tendencies.
His leadership style evolved from an initially caring Benevolent Boss – who attempted to save soldiers from the Council's blastia explosion – to viewing subordinates as disposable tools. He provided Schwann with a supposed shut-off switch for his blastia heart when witnessing his despair, though the switch's failure left intent ambiguous. By the time of the main events, he readily sacrifices loyal followers, exemplified when he attempts to collapse the Shrine of Baction to eliminate threats, knowingly trapping Schwann inside. This callousness extended to manipulating Princess Estellise, exploiting her powers as the Child of the Full Moon to further his goals, regardless of her physical and emotional toll.
Philosophically, Alexei became convinced that humanity's reliance on blastia poisoned the world and the Empire's corruption was too entrenched for conventional reform. His solution centered on seizing absolute authority to forcibly reshape society. He orchestrated complex schemes manipulating guilds, constructing the Mobile Fortress Heracles, and orchestrating events to gain access to ancient shrines like Baction and Zaude. He believed Zaude housed a weapon capable of unleashing a controlled catastrophe to cleanse the world, intending to rule the survivors. However, his misinterpretation of Zaude's true function as a seal resulted in the accidental release of the apocalyptic Adephagos. Confronted and defeated by the heroes at Zaude, he experienced profound regret upon realizing his error. Struck down by Yuri Lowell and crushed by falling debris, he died acknowledging his own folly.
While *The First Strike* offers a glimpse of his authority and detachment, his narrative details a transformation from an idealistic knight into a tyrannical figure consumed by a warped utilitarian philosophy. His actions consistently stemmed from the conviction that despotism was the necessary cost of salvation, ultimately leading to catastrophic consequences.
