Description
Henken Bekkener is a ship captain within the Anti-Earth Union Group, first seen in command of the Argama, the organization's flagship during the Gryps Conflict. Prior to his involvement with the AEUG, he was a former member of the Earth Federation Forces. During the One Year War, he served as the captain of the Suruga, a modified Salamis-class transport ship. In this role, he was involved in humanitarian missions, including the transport of space immigrants, and his vessel was destroyed during the Battle of A Baoa Qu, though he survived. A tall, broad-shouldered man with blonde hair and a burly build, his physical presence is notable. Approximately thirty-one years old and originally from a space colony such as Von Braun City, he represents a spacenoid perspective.

Personality-wise, Henken is characterized by a strong but dynamic and jovial nature. He presents an even temper and a good-natured demeanor, which helps create a relaxed yet professional atmosphere aboard his ships, earning him the respect and loyalty of his crews. Despite his often cheerful and sometimes theatrical manner when issuing orders, he is a competent and sagacious officer who takes his duties seriously. A key trait is his notable awkwardness in romantic matters, particularly in his persistent yet clumsy courtship of Emma Sheen, a former Titans pilot. He frequently summons her under official pretenses simply for the chance to see her, revealing a shy and bumbling side that contrasts with his professional confidence. He also displays a habit of touching his chin when embarrassed or worried. In combat situations, he has a tendency to refuse putting on a normal suit during surprise attacks, preferring not to be interrupted in giving orders.

Henken’s motivations are rooted in a deep disillusionment with the Earth Federation, specifically the oppressive tactics of the Titans against spacenoids. This distaste led him to defect and join the AEUG, where he became a core leader working closely with figures like Quattro Bajeena and AEUG founder Blex Forer. His role in the story begins as the first captain of the Argama, where he commands the ship during critical missions, most notably the successful capture of the RX-178 Gundam Mk-II units from a Titan base. Following the rescue of a shuttle carrying the more experienced captain Bright Noa, Henken demonstrates his lack of personal ambition by voluntarily and graciously stepping down, acknowledging Bright's superior professional experience and allowing him to take command of the Argama. Henken subsequently transfers to captain another vessel, the Radish.

His key relationships are central to his character. His most significant personal connection is with Emma Sheen. Initially, she rebuffs his advances, but over time she reciprocates his genuine affection, and their relationship slowly develops. His bond with Bright Noa is professional and marked by mutual respect, as shown by his humility in relinquishing command. He also maintains a strong working relationship with Blex Forer and Quattro Bajeena as part of the AEUG’s leadership. Throughout the story, Henken undergoes a subtle development from a capable but somewhat untested commander to a decisive leader willing to make the ultimate sacrifice. His personal arc is tragically cut short during the final battle for Gryps II. When Emma finds herself in a desperate battle against the enemy pilot Yazan Gable, Henken orders the Radish to move in to support her. Yazan single-handedly destroys the ship, resulting in Henken’s death as he perishes in front of Emma, his final act a sacrifice to protect the woman he loved.

In terms of abilities, Henken is a highly skilled naval commander and strategist. He successfully leads ships through both combat and humanitarian missions, demonstrating an exceptional capacity for tactical thinking and maintaining crew morale under pressure. While he is not classified as a Newtype, he did reportedly sense the presence of Char Aznable during the One Year War, which may indicate a degree of heightened spatial awareness. His primary notable abilities lie in his command and leadership, culminating in his final courageous decision to sacrifice his ship and his life for a comrade.
