Description
"Amatsuki" is a supernatural historical fantasy anime set in a richly detailed version of Edo-period Japan, blending elements of mythology, action, and mystery. The protagonist, Tokidoki Rikugou, is a high school student who struggles with history and is sent to a virtual reality museum to study the Edo period. After donning a special headset, he is transported into a vividly recreated Edo world. However, the simulation malfunctions, trapping him in this alternate reality where he encounters supernatural beings and dangerous situations.
In this world, Tokidoki meets a mysterious girl named Kon Shinonome, who possesses the ability to see spirits, and a half-demon named Kuchiha, who wields a powerful sword. Together, they navigate a landscape filled with yokai (supernatural creatures), demons, and otherworldly threats. Tokidoki discovers that his presence in this world is not accidental; he is drawn into a conflict involving the "Amatsuki," a group of individuals tasked with maintaining the balance between the human and spirit realms. As the story progresses, Tokidoki learns that his own past is intertwined with the mysteries of this world, and he must uncover the truth about his identity and the forces at play.
The narrative explores themes of identity, memory, and the blurred lines between reality and illusion. Tokidoki's journey is marked by encounters with various factions, including the Amatsuki, who have their own agendas, and the antagonistic forces seeking to disrupt the balance between worlds. The series delves into the complexities of its characters, revealing their motivations and backstories, while maintaining a focus on the overarching conflict. The interplay between historical elements and supernatural lore creates a compelling backdrop for the unfolding drama, as Tokidoki and his companions confront both external threats and internal struggles.

Kuchiha drags Tokidoki to the inn where Kon,a tanuki who takes human form, works. Kon explains that the history test simulation has trapped Tokidoki in this recreated Edo period with no exit function. Tokidoki’s left eye now reveals the true forms of ayakashi, supernatural beings that inhabit the area. A tengu named Tsuru arrives and demands protection money from the inn. Since Tokidoki has no money, Kon arranges for him to work at the inn to pay off the debt. Kuchiha, a warrior who hunts rogue ayakashi, states her mission to eliminate those that prey on humans. Tokidoki begins cleaning the inn but spots a dangerous ayakashi nearby using his altered eye. Kuchiha confronts the ayakashi, demonstrates her combat skills, and kills it. Tsuru mentions that a powerful ayakashi is gathering strength in the mountains, threatening the fragile coexistence between humans and ayakashi. Tokidoki’s ability to perceive ayakashi makes him a target for those who would exploit or eliminate such individuals. Tokidoki decides to stay at the inn temporarily, accepting work while searching for a way home, but his presence accelerates local tensions.
3Episode 3
Tokidoki accompanies Kuchiha to a festival held in the city. Kuchiha searches for a specific tsukumogami, hoping to gain information about the mysterious woman who attacked them. Shinonome steps in and severs one of Momozono’s arms with a single strike, revealing his superior skill. Tokidoki, unable to fight, watches the clash and realizes his own powerlessness in this world. After Momozono retreats, Shinonome explains that the tsukumogami are drawn to the city because of a growing imbalance caused by the Edo government’s secret experiments. Kuchiha admits she already knew of these experiments and had been tracking Momozono to locate the facility conducting them. The episode closes with Tokidoki resolving to train with Shinonome in order to protect himself and others, while Kuchiha sets out alone toward the government’s hidden research site.

Upon arrival, a mysterious entity confronts Tokidoki in a separate dimension and identifies his left eye as something special. Tokidoki returns to find the shrine’s priestesses have mistaken the powerful inugami spirit residing within Kuchiha for a hostile force. The priestesses attempt to forcibly draw out the dormant powers from both Tokidoki and Kuchiha to discern their origins. The ritual releases a colossal dog-like demon from Kuchiha, causing the shrine to descend into chaos. Princess Ginshu appears to intervene but nearly gets crushed by the rampaging beast. The enigmatic Bonten then manifests, taking possession of one of the priestesses to halt the destruction. In the aftermath, Ginshu reveals to Tokidoki that he is known as the "blank page," an individual with the unique ability to materialize objects by imagining them with his left eye. This revelation places Tokidoki at the center of the shrine's interests and the broader conflicts of this world. 8Kami no Kioku
Tokidoki,Kon, and Kuchiha reach the inner sanctuary of the shrine. The god manifests as a massive, immobile form surrounded by suspended human memories. Kon warns Tokidoki that interfering with the god could destroy the balance between humans and ayakashi. Kuchiha recognizes the god as her father, a being who sacrificed his own identity to protect the land. Tokidoki refuses to accept that the cost must be the loss of individual identities. He steps forward and touches the god’s core, causing stored memories to flow into him. Kon attempts to pull Tokidoki back but gets caught in the memory torrent. Kuchiha uses her inherited power to separate Tokidoki from the god, severing the connection. The god, now without its memory collection, begins to crumble. The barrier flickers, and ayakashi outside the shrine sense the weakening. Tokidoki collapses from the influx of memories. Kon and Kuchiha carry him away as the shrine’s structure destabilizes. Kuchiha engages the Kakashi directly, using her swordsmanship to shield Rikugō while he struggles to control his eye’s unstable energy. Toki, the fox spirit, intervenes on Rikugō’s side after revealing her own past as a former Kakashi, formally breaking with the group. The Kakashi leader triggers a pre-set barrier that constricts the area and forces Rikugō’s eye to activate beyond his control. The resulting burst of spiritual energy destroys part of the structure and briefly incapacitates both sides. Kon arrives and applies a sealing talisman to Rikugō’s eye, stabilizing him and allowing the group to retreat through a passage she opens. Once safe, Kuchiha warns Rikugō that repeated loss of control will permanently alter him into something like the Kakashi. The Kakashi leader, recovering, orders his forces to track Rikugō regardless of cost. A new group of demons, drawn by the released energy, appears on the border of the conflict zone, preparing to enter the fray.
