Description
Bonten is a powerful demon, specifically a tengu, who holds the position of Heaven's Seat, the leader of the demons in the world of Amatsuki. He is also recognized as one of the four Holy Ones. Originally known as Hiwa, he was taken in as a young boy by the snake demon Byakuroku, who raised him to be his heir. Bonten was reluctant and cold towards the lesser demons he was meant to lead, preferring to keep his distance.

In his youth, Bonten attempted to kill the holy priestess Ginshu at a shrine but discovered Ginshu was merely a decoy for the real priestess, a girl named Shinshu. Instead of continuing his attack, Bonten left, and a strange friendship developed between them. Over the winter, they met many times to play various games, using the interactions to learn about each other's worlds without crossing certain boundaries. Their relationship changed drastically after a violent incident where the priestess Shinshu severely injured Tsuyukusa, a tree demon who considers Bonten his older brother. A bloody battle ensued in which Ginshu and Byakuroku mortally wounded each other. To prevent disaster, a deal was made with Heaven. Shinshu's powers were transferred to Bonten, and he took the name Bonten, replacing Byakuroku as Heaven's Seat.

Bonten's personality is characterized by a distant and carefully contained demeanor. He holds himself with an air of mystery, using diversion and a sharp temper to hide his vulnerabilities and secrets. He is known for being blunt and not mincing his words, often branding him as an asshole because he cannot stand idiots and will not soften the truth if it needs to be said. However, this is a front to protect himself from past hurts. He has experienced deep loss and regret and is driven to prevent those he cares about from suffering the same fate. Despite his arrogant and vain surface, he is terrible at looking after himself, requiring help with tasks like dressing and arranging his hair. He frequently puts his own welfare aside for greater priorities and suffers from insomnia, often going so long without sleep that his body rebels and he passes out.

Bonten's primary motivation is to free the world from the influence of Heaven's Net, a fate-determining force that he can now see and read. After receiving Shinshu's power, he gained the ability to see this net and even gave the same ability to Ginshu, who decided to fight against it. Their relationship turned into another game, with Ginshu aiming to destroy the world and Bonten aiming to liberate it from the net of fate. To achieve his goal, he seeks to use the power of the Unwritten Page, a force that exists outside of Heaven's Net. He begins courting the protagonist, Toki, who possesses this power, hoping to use it for his own ends. Bonten is also shown to have extensive knowledge of modern science and technology, making references to figures like Napoleon Bonaparte and recognizing modern medical equipment such as an IV bag, which surprises those around him.

His key relationships are complex and long-standing. His bond with Ginshu is central, marked by deep fondness and a mutual unwillingness to openly admit it. Their interactions are often characterized by rude remarks from Bonten, yet they have over fifty years of history filled with subtext and a deep connection. Tsuyukusa is another crucial figure in his life; as a tree demon who works for him and regards him as an older brother, Tsuyukusa resents humans for the death of Byakuroku, an event that profoundly changed both their lives. Bonten also created a being named Utsubushi, a tengu who serves him and regards Bonten as his father, as he is a collaboration of spirits that Bonten gathered and gave form to.

Throughout the story, Bonten develops from a reluctant and cold heir into a calculating leader burdened by responsibility. His past trauma, particularly the loss of his adoptive father Byakuroku and the tragic events surrounding Ginshu and Tsuyukusa, shapes his present actions. He is no longer the impulsive young demon who acted out of pique but a measured individual who plays a long game, hiding critical truths from those he cares about if he feels they are not ready to hear them.

As a demon, Bonten possesses several notable abilities. His most significant power is the ability to read Heaven's Net, which allows him to see fate, including both the future and the past. This is not simple precognition; he typically focuses on an individual to get a detailed view of a situation, literally pulling their memories out of them without causing harm. He can also manipulate life itself, which translates to moving souls, including his own. He can keep life in place when it is attempting to leave a body, effectively preventing death. He has used this ability to possess others, create another demon from the life energy remaining on a battlefield, and keep both a human and a demon from dying indefinitely. Bonten has wings, but they are damaged from an injury in his youth, preventing him from flying. He can still use them as shields or to create a powerful gust of wind strong enough to blow a human away. It is implied that all demons have a true demonic form, but Bonten is powerful enough to maintain a human appearance even while unconscious.
