TV-Series
Description
Keizou Kirishima is the Buddhist monk in charge of the temple where the cat deity resides. As the father of the twin sisters Kotone and Akari Kirishima, he is a supporting character whose actions and position are central to the series. He is also the owner of a small male calico cat named Tama.
Keizou possesses a joyful and enthusiastic attitude towards life, though his behavior often defies the typical expectations of a monk. He has a well-known fondness for visiting cabaret clubs, a hobby that seems at odds with his religious vocation. One of his greatest passions is the history of his local town, and he becomes extremely excited whenever young people show an interest in the subject. He is known to eagerly share his knowledge using a long scroll detailing local history. Despite his cheerful and eccentric nature, he is genuinely caring and loves his daughters. However, he struggles with financial management, frequently spending large amounts of money on incense and finding himself unable to pay debts. This lack of funds often leads him to seek contributions from others. He also has a playful and unpredictable side, sometimes wearing unusual disguises, such as a suit paired with an afro wig.
Keizou’s role in the story is directly tied to the curse placed on the protagonist, Junpei Kousaka. The narrative begins when a careless act by Junpei damages the statue of a cat deity at the temple where Keizou presides. As the monk responsible for the temple, Keizou is the guardian of the statue and the spiritual grounds. Later, it is revealed that Keizou himself accidentally causes the Jizou statue to fall over again, which further complicates matters and necessitates expensive repairs. He acts as a source of information and a gateway to the temple's spiritual matters. His knowledge of local history also proves useful to the main characters on occasion, such as when a student needs to write a report on the town’s past.
Keizou maintains several important relationships. He is the father of Kotone and Akari Kirishima, two classmates of Junpei who are aware of his curse and possess spiritual abilities of their own. His relationship with his daughters appears close, as he is a supportive, if somewhat unconventional, parent. He also has a connection with Junpei, whom he often interacts with concerning the damaged statue and the subsequent curse. His cat, Tama, is a key figure who communicates with Junpei and spreads the word among the local cats about the atonement Junpei must perform.
While Keizou does not undergo significant personal transformation over the course of the series, his primary function is to provide context for the supernatural elements of the plot and to add a layer of comic relief through his un-monklike habits. His notable abilities lie not in combat or magic, but in his extensive knowledge of local history, which he enthusiastically shares. He is shown to have the authority and responsibility to perform cleansing ceremonies and other rituals at the temple, highlighting his genuine, if flawed, role as a spiritual figure.
