Description
Professor Clover is a recurring antagonist in the anime and manga series Mysterious Joker and serves as the leader of the criminal organization known as Clover. Very little is known about his origins, and his face is almost never revealed to other characters, which adds to his air of mystery. Before taking on the identity of Professor Clover, he was an agent of the Federation known as Agent Clover, and in that role he attempted to obtain the Pandora key from the Pandora Kingdom on behalf of the Federation. He was stopped by Silver Heart, then an agent known as Silver, alongside the young phantom thieves Joker, Queen, and Spade. In the confrontation that followed, Clover lost an arm and nearly died, only to be rescued by his own future self, an event that points to the unusual, time-related circumstances surrounding his history.

In terms of personality, Clover is a criminal mastermind with no moral constraints when it comes to achieving his goals. He is driven primarily by a desire for power and by a deep, long-standing grudge against the phantom thieves, especially Silver Heart, whom he regards as his arch-nemesis. He shows little restraint in his methods and is willing to use extreme cruelty, manipulation, and violence without hesitation. Despite this ruthlessness, he has an unexpected fondness for a cat named Doubt, a small detail that gives his otherwise cold character a touch of eccentricity.

His motivations are rooted in revenge and ambition. He harbors intense resentment toward Silver Heart, and much of his scheming is aimed at destroying the phantom thieves and seizing powerful treasures and influence. He is also responsible for some of the darkest events in the story, including the deaths of the parents of Joker, Spade, and Queen. At one point, he and an accomplice disguised themselves as Joker's deceased parents in order to infiltrate Joker's mansion and steal the Time Telling Goddess statue, a deception that demonstrates both his cunning and his willingness to exploit personal tragedy.

In the larger narrative, Clover functions as one of the principal villains. He is the overarching antagonist of the first season and the main antagonist of the second season, serving as a direct opponent to Silver Heart and a persistent threat to Joker and his allies. He often operates from behind the scenes, directing his organization and carrying out elaborate schemes rather than confronting his enemies directly.

His key relationships are defined by conflict and manipulation. With Silver Heart, he shares a long and bitter history, the details of which remain largely unexplained, but which clearly fuels his hatred. He plays a particularly cruel role in the backstory of Queen: in the anime, he meets her while she is visiting her parents' grave and lies to her, telling her that Silver Heart killed her family, then allows her to stay with him on the promise that she will be able to take revenge on the phantom thieves. This manipulation turns her into a pawn in his plans. He also makes a pact with Shadow Joker, promising to wake Shadow's sister Rose from her sleep in exchange for the three magical crystals of the staff of Kairos, a bargain that ties Shadow to his service. With Joker himself, Clover is a central enemy, and his involvement in the murder of Joker's parents makes their conflict deeply personal.

Across the story, Clover's character develops mainly through the revelation of his past and the consequences of his obsession. His defeat by Silver Heart in the past, the loss of his arm, and his rescue by his future self explain how he survived and ultimately became the shadowy figure he is in the present. Near the end of his arc, when Joker and Shadow are attempting to steal the staff of Kairos, Clover meets a violent end, struck directly by a torrent of sulfuric acid; the phantom thieves had no intention of eliminating him, but he dies nonetheless. A supplementary booklet describes him as unspeakably vile to the very end, underscoring that he never abandons his wicked nature or finds redemption.

In terms of abilities, Clover is a genius-level strategist and a highly skilled scientist and inventor. He commands a large criminal organization with many subordinates who carry out his orders, and he employs advanced technology and machinery in his operations. His expertise in disguise and deception allows him to manipulate others emotionally, as seen with Queen, while his organizational skill and patience make him a dangerous long-term opponent. His willingness to use any means necessary, combined with his intellectual gifts and his personal vendetta, makes him one of the most formidable enemies the phantom thieves face.
