Description
Yatonokami originates as an ancient serpent deity from Japanese folklore, documented in the Hitachi no Kuni Fudoki as fearsome field-dwelling entities. Legend states encountering him resulted in family extermination. A man named Yahazu no uji no Matachi eventually killed the serpent kami, established boundaries between human and divine realms, and enshrined Yatonokami to prevent curses, with his descendants continuing the worship practices.
Within "GeGeGe no Kitarō: Nippon Bakuretsu!!", Yatonokami predates human civilization, existing since the world's creation. Eons ago, he attempted to reduce the living world to primordial dust and rock. Enma-Daiō intervened, defeating Yatonokami and fracturing his essence into eight separate souls. To prevent revival, Enma-Daiō entrusted one soul to humanity and sealed another within his own body. Orochi-Onna, who originated from a fragment of Yatonokami's broken fang, later contained the remaining seven souls.
Yatonokami initially appears disguised as a human boy named Kyōya, possessing short black hair, orange irises, fair skin, and green and yellow clothing. This form allows him to infiltrate a family by manipulating the memories of a girl named Hana and her mother, making them believe he is a relative.
As his true nature resurfaces, his body transforms. An intermediate serpent-like form features a serpentine lower body, a spiraled horn, elongated limbs, teal scales with dark teal spiral patterns, white hair, yellow eyes, sharp teeth, clawed nails, and seven salmon-pink tomoe markings along his torso. His hands become eyeless snake heads capable of extending like tentacles.
His subsequent humanoid manifestation exhibits a muscular build, sharper facial features, purple irises with black sclerae, shorter white hair, and dark teal arm patterns. The tomoe markings spread across his chest, and his horn elongates. He regains legs, while retaining snake-head hands and a serpent tail protruding from his back.
Yatonokami's ultimate and true form manifests as a colossal, eight-headed serpent of mountainous scale. The primary head alone dwarfs cities, while the other necks can span Japan's length. This form possesses pale green skin, a white-scaled underbelly, intricate red markings across its midsection, black dorsal spikes, and a cobra-like main head adorned with a red jewel, black-spiked hood extensions, and slate-gray facial features. The seven secondary heads share similar features but display pale yellow-green skin, black crack-like markings, and red sclerae in their eyes. All heads possess sharp teeth and red forked tongues.
His personality reflects primordial origins and destructive goals. He harbors no remorse, demonstrated by indifference to Orochi-Onna's self-sacrifice. Consumed by annihilation, his true form repeatedly utters "die!" while attempting to eradicate all life.
His powers include shapeshifting, memory manipulation, and secreting lethal "Infinity Poison" (Mugen-Doku) venom through bites. His snake-head hands function as weapons. In his colossal form, he breathes "Petrifying Poison Breath" (Sekka-Doku-Iki) that turns living organisms to stone, wields immense physical strength capable of leveling landscapes, and emits devastating roars causing tsunamis. His unique yōkai energy disrupts and controls other yōkai. The distribution of his eight souls remains a critical vulnerability.
In the side story "The Great Yōkai War: Guardians: Heian Hyakkitan", Yatonokami appears as an antagonist. Following his defeat, parts of his body contribute to the physical composition of another entity, Nue.
