Description
Lantis is the younger brother of Zagato, the antagonist who abducted Princess Emeraude during Cephiro's first crisis. He possesses a tall, well-built frame, short black hair, and blue eyes, bearing a strong resemblance to his older brother. He wears black wrought armor adorned with pale blue jewels across the shoulders and chest, a light blue mantle, black undergarments, and a distinctive golden headband.
Trained alongside Zagato under the sorcerer Clef, Lantis excelled as a magic swordsman (Kailu), eventually becoming Princess Emeraude's personal bodyguard. He departed Cephiro after learning of Zagato and Emeraude's forbidden romance, foreseeing the tragedy their love would bring due to the Pillar system's constraints. During his absence, he traveled extensively, spending significant time in Autozam where he befriended Eagle Vision, the commander of its forces. Despite an offer for a permanent military position there, he declined.
Lantis returned to Cephiro after Zagato and Emeraude's deaths, rescuing the fairy Primera en route. His personality is marked by stoicism, emotional reserve, and quiet intensity, though he harbors deep compassion and a commitment to protecting others. Mokona describes him as possessing "the strongest heart of all the people of Cephiro." His primary motivation is dismantling the Pillar system, which he blames for the fates of his brother and Emeraude, believing it inevitably sacrifices individual happiness for planetary stability.
As a warrior, Lantis wields a magic sword capable of unlocking mystical doors and employs high-level spells: "Cresta" (Kakuen Boujo) for defense, "Sandasu" (Inazuma Shourai) for lightning-based attacks, and "Clefto" (Seijyuu Shoukan) for summoning creatures like a winged horse. His combat prowess seamlessly blends sword techniques with magical energy, making him one of Cephiro's most formidable fighters.
His relationships drive significant development. With Eagle Vision, he shares mutual respect and the common goal of ending the Pillar system, though they later compete to become the next Pillar. This rivalry strains but does not sever their bond, particularly as both develop feelings for Hikaru Shidou, the Magic Knight of Fire. Lantis's romance with Hikaru is more prominent in the anime, where they confess their love amid battles against Cephiro's invaders. In the manga, his affections are reciprocated ambiguously, with Hikaru expressing equal love for him and Eagle. Primera, the fairy he saved, remains devoted to him, though he does not return her romantic sentiments.
Lantis's narrative arc culminates in opposing the Pillar system. He vies to become Pillar specifically to abolish it, ensuring no one else endures his brother's fate. In the anime, he is captured by enemies due to his reluctance to harm Hikaru, leading to Eagle's sacrificial rescue. The manga concludes with Hikaru, chosen as Pillar, destroying the system entirely—fulfilling Lantis's goal. Across adaptations, his character evolves from a grief-driven figure to one embracing hope through his connections, particularly with Hikaru.
The OVA reimagines elements of his backstory, portraying him as Emeraude's brother rather than Zagato's, contradicting the primary series canon. In this version, his role centers on aiding the Magic Knights against Eagle, who seeks to resurrect Emeraude through destructive means.
