Description
Mikado rules as the Emperor of Japan. Intrigued by tales of Kaguya-hime’s unmatched beauty, he journeys personally to see her and falls instantly under her spell. He proposes marriage, but Kaguya-hime refuses, bound by her otherworldly origins to reject palace life. Undeterred, Mikado sustains a written courtship across three years, sending her persistent declarations of affection.
When Kaguya-hime discloses her celestial nature and imminent return to the Moon, Mikado commands guards to shield her from the lunar emissaries. These warriors falter against the ethereal visitors, who reclaim Kaguya-hime. After her departure, Mikado receives her final letter alongside the elixir of immortality. Consumed by sorrow, he orders both burned atop the mountain closest to heaven—believed to be Mount Fuji—so its smoke might touch her.
This act intertwines with folklore explaining Mount Fuji’s name and volcanic nature.
