Description
Makoto Sugihara, also known as Mako, was a delinquent from Ebizuka Middle School who went on to attend Suzuran High. At Ebizuka, he formed the powerful Ebizuka Trio alongside Hiromi Kirishima and Toshiaki Honjou. The trio, regarded as the strongest at their middle school, never accepted any followers.

Their middle school days were marked by frequent clashes with students from other schools. They defeated groups from Seta Mid and 3rd Mid, the latter backed by a Suzuran student. This particular fight drew the attention of the renowned Suzuran graduate Genjirou Katsuragi, who intervened and broke up the conflict.

Upon entering Suzuran High, the Ebizuka Trio quickly made their mark by winning the Freshmen War. They turned down an invitation to join Izaki Shun's GPS faction, though in the reboot continuity, they did assist GPS in its fight against the Serizawa Army. The trio also challenged Suzuran's legendary fighter Rindaman, said to be even stronger than Katsuragi, but were easily defeated.

Makoto Sugihara spoke little initially, but after befriending transfer student Harumichi Bouya, he became more talkative and expressive. This friendship often led to frequent fights between them. He stood as the strongest fighter within the Ebizuka Trio and was second only to Bouya in the group that formed around him, known as the Harumichi Family.

He had a preference for spicy foods and enjoyed sitting quietly at the back of his classroom, soaking in the sunlight, falling asleep, and thinking about love. His favorite movies were The Godfather Trilogy. He was often seen wearing a pair of sunglasses and a hat, the latter given to him by his girlfriend during his later years at Suzuran.

When Bouya first arrived at Suzuran and attacked Hiromi Kirishima, Makoto and Honjou confronted him. Makoto won a coin toss to fight Bouya first but was defeated. This loss led the trio to realize they needed Bouya's strength to challenge Hideto Bandou, who was then attempting to take control of Suzuran. The four formed an alliance and often worked together afterward.

Makoto fought in several major conflicts alongside Bouya and the Harumichi Family, including battles against the group T.F.O.A. and the rival school Housen Academy. During the war with Housen, he was cornered and beaten by Hideyuki Bitou and his underlings. After recovering, he faced Bitou one-on-one and won decisively.

He was the only member of the Harumichi Family to have a girlfriend, a fact that sometimes irritated the others. After his time at Suzuran, he did not graduate and instead began working as a carpenter at his girlfriend's father's company.

In terms of fighting ability, Bouya ranked Makoto as the fifth strongest fighter he ever faced. His combat record included victories over opponents such as Anzai Mitsuhiko and Hideyuki Bitou, and losses to fighters like Bouya, Rindaman, Genji, and Ryuushin Kunou.

His name, along with the other Ebizuka Trio members, later appeared on a Suzuran combat rating list in "Crows Explode," where he and Honjou shared the tenth position.
