Nobuo Tobita
Description
Nobuo Tobita is a veteran Japanese voice actor and narrator born on November 6, 1959, in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan. He is affiliated with the talent agency ARTSVISION and has been active in the industry since his debut in 1982. Throughout a career spanning over four decades, Tobita has become renowned for his exceptional versatility, often described as a "chameleon" for his ability to portray characters with wildly different personalities and vocal qualities.
Tobita's first role was as Bob in the 1982 anime television series Cybot Robotchi. His career-defining performance came in 1985 when he was cast as Kamille Bidan in the iconic Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam. This role established him as a leading voice actor and remains one of his most celebrated performances, showcasing his ability to convey a character's sensitivity, rebelliousness, and tragic fate. He would later reprise the role in various sequels, films, and video games, including the Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam: A New Translation film trilogy in the mid-2000s. Another of his most famous and enduring roles is that of Sueo Maruo, the bespectacled class president, in the long-running series Chibi Maruko-chan.
The breadth of Tobita's career is vast, with major roles across numerous popular series. He has voiced significant characters such as Takeda Kanryū in Rurouni Kenshin, Ebisu and Zetsu in the Naruto franchise, Suzaku in YuYu Hakusho, and Albert Heinrich/004 in Cyborg 009 The Cyborg Soldier. In more recent years, he has continued to take on diverse roles, including the eccentric Dayon in Mr. Osomatsu, the scientist Adelheid von Schugel in Saga of Tanya the Evil and its spin-off Isekai Quartet, Akihito Fujii in Domestic Girlfriend, Yūya Kazami in Detective Conan: Zero's Tea Time, and Gus in The Faraway Paladin. His filmography also includes roles in The Eccentric Family, Mieruko-chan, Parallel World Pharmacy, and many others.
This extensive list of credits is a testament to his remarkable range. He is able to move effortlessly from beautiful and gentle characters, such as Lumiale in the Angelique series, to rough and aggressive ones, like Domon Ishijima in Flame of Recca. He is also skilled at portraying eccentric or madcap personalities, such as the villainous Major in Hellsing Ultimate or the comedic Dr. Eyepatch in The Super Milk-chan Show. His ability to control his voice by changing his point of articulation and employing different breathing techniques allows him to create these distinct and memorable personas.
Beyond animation, Tobita is also active as a stage actor and narrator. He has lent his voice to numerous video games, including major franchises like Final Fantasy XII as Vayne Solidor, Tales of Berseria as Melchior, and Street Fighter V as Zeku. He also participates in foreign film and drama dubbing, and has voiced many characters for audio dramas. Throughout his long career, he has been recognized for his professionalism and mentorship, with fellow voice actor Takehito Koyasu considering him an inspiration. His approach to his craft is characterized by a thorough analysis of each character, and he remains dedicated to his work, maintaining the quality of his performances well into his sixties.
