Description
Maximilian Bennusa Ganelon, often referred to simply as Ganelon, is a central antagonist in the story. He is the former Duke of Lutetia within the kingdom of Brune. He is depicted as an older man with short gray hair and brown eyes. When King Faron of Brune falls ill, Ganelon engages in a power struggle with his fellow duke, Felix Aaron Thenardier, for control of the kingdom. This dispute pushes Brune to the brink of civil war. Ganelon is ambitious and ruthless, willing to eliminate anyone who stands in his way. He dispatches his subordinate, Marquis Charon Anquetil Greast, to assassinate the protagonist Tigrevurmud Vorn, though the attempt fails. Later, when the knight Roland tries to plead Tigre’s case before the king, Ganelon kills Roland. After Thenardier's defeat and death, Ganelon flees into exile alongside Greast and is given shelter by the war maiden Valentina Glinka Estes of Osterode. Despite his initial setbacks, Ganelon remains a persistent threat. In a later confrontation, he kills the demon Baba Yaga, demonstrating that he possesses some degree of combat capability or cunning. Throughout the series, Ganelon serves as a recurring antagonist whose machinations drive much of the conflict, though his character undergoes little personal change. His name and role are inspired by the legendary traitor Ganelon from the medieval Song of Roland, reflecting his treacherous nature. Notable abilities include political manipulation and military leadership, but he wields no supernatural powers. His key relationships include his rivalry with Thenardier, his alliance with Greast, his enmity with Tigre and the war maidens, and his temporary alliance with Valentina Glinka Estes.
