Description
Keisuke Yamanami, known in some localizations as Keisuke Sanan, is one of the vice-commanders of the Shinsengumi. His character is based on the historical figure of the same name, and he is portrayed as an intelligent, duty-oriented individual who initially presents a kind and gentle demeanor. However, beneath this calm surface lies a severe and intense side, which has led fellow commander Hijikata to consider him the most frightening member of the group. He has a subtle, mischievous tendency to provoke others, particularly Hijikata, but his core nature is that of a pacifist, as he consistently argues against unnecessary violence.
Yamanami's role within the Shinsengumi is multifaceted. He is deeply involved in the group's strategic and administrative decisions. In his early interactions with the protagonist, he is cautious yet fair, advocating for her to be allowed to stay with the Shinsengumi because her knowledge of her missing father could be useful. He is also the one who insists she continue to disguise herself as a man to avoid disrupting the morale of the troops. He shares a close and long-standing relationship with the other founding members, particularly Kondou and Hijikata, and his bond with them is a central part of his personal story.
A pivotal event that profoundly changes Yamanami is when his left arm is gravely wounded during a mission. The injury renders him unable to wield a sword, which is a devastating blow for a warrior of his status. Following this, his personality shifts drastically; he becomes consumed by self-loathing, passive-aggressive, and deeply irritable, causing his comrades to begin avoiding him. In his desperate search for a way to overcome his weakness, he turns to the Water of Life, an experimental and dangerous substance. Drinking this transforms him into a fury, granting him power but at a tremendous cost to his humanity.
His motivations become increasingly complex after this transformation. Driven by a fervent zeal for his research, he becomes obsessed with mastering the Water of Life and discovering its secrets. In some narratives, this obsession consumes him entirely, leading him down a path to madness and turning him into a primary antagonist, particularly in routes focusing on characters like Heisuke or Saito. In other scenarios, he is able to master his inner turmoil and find a different resolution.
In terms of abilities, Yamanami is initially a highly skilled swordsman, enough to be counted among the Shinsengumi's top officers. However, his most notable abilities later stem from his transformation into a fury, which grants him superhuman strength and resilience. His greatest asset, however, is his intellect. Throughout the story, he is depicted as a strategic thinker and a man of science, constantly seeking to understand and manipulate the forces around him, whether they are political or supernatural.
