TV-Series
Description
Keisuke Sannan is a core member of the Shinsengumi, holding the position of Vice-Commander or Secretary-General, a rank equal to that of Toshizo Hijikata and second only to Commander Isami Kondo. He is a samurai who originally hails from the Sendai domain. Sannan is an intelligent and strategic individual, often serving as a key advisor to the group's leadership.
Initially, Sannan presents a calm, courteous, and soft-spoken exterior. He is a dutiful and principled man who, at heart, holds pacifist beliefs, objecting to the killing of civilians and the use of overly aggressive tactics. Despite his gentle facade, he possesses a severe and intimidating side that surfaces when he is angered, leading Hijikata to describe him as the scariest of all the Shinsengumi members. He also has a subtle, mischievous tendency to provoke others, particularly Hijikata.
The defining turning point for Sannan's character comes from a grave injury sustained during a skirmish in Osaka, which cripples his right arm and leaves him unable to effectively wield a sword. For a samurai whose identity and purpose are tied to his ability to fight, this is a fate worse than death. This disability plunges him into a state of deep despair, bitterness, and self-loathing. He becomes irritable, passive-aggressive, and prone to cynical remarks, making him difficult to be around. He develops an intense hatred of being pitied, feeling that his title and strategic mind are meaningless without his power as a warrior, and he grows increasingly isolated from his comrades.
Driven by a desperate need to be useful to the Shinsengumi and to reclaim his identity as a swordsman, Sannan becomes obsessed with the Ochimizu, also known as the Water of Life. He drinks the elixir, transforming himself into a Fury, a being with enhanced strength and regenerative abilities but cursed with an insatiable bloodlust and a dramatically shortened lifespan. Following his transformation, his motivation shifts to a fervent obsession with his research on the Fury condition. He is driven by guilt over what he has done to himself and others who have become Furies, and he relentlessly searches for an antidote or a way to control the bloodlust. In some narrative routes, this zealotry consumes him, making him a primary antagonist who dreams of creating a kingdom of Furies. In others, his obsession is more controlled, or he feigns madness for his own strategic reasons.
Throughout the story, Sannan's role is complex and varies greatly depending on the path of the narrative. He can be a tragic ally or a dangerous enemy. He is the leader of the Fury Corps, a unit of transformed soldiers, a position that further isolates him from the rest of the Shinsengumi as he can only move at night. His key relationships are fraught with tension. He has a deep, mutual respect for Hijikata, though their leadership styles often clash. His bond with Heisuke Toudou, who also becomes a Fury, is particularly significant, and in many stories, his actions directly lead to tragedy. His relationship with the heroine, Chizuru Yukimura, is also central. He is intrigued by her demon blood as a potential key to his research, though she is often the one who shows him persistent kindness and faith, helping him reconnect with his humanity.
Sannan's character development centers on his struggle to accept his identity. Initially proud of the power being a Fury grants him, he eventually comes to see it as a curse. He learns that using his abilities causes his body to decay, turning him to ash. Over time, he is forced to confront the consequences of his choices. In some storylines, he overcomes his guilt and self-hatred, accepting himself for what he has become and finding the confidence to contemplate a future. In others, he meets a tragic end, using his remaining power to destroy his own research and the other Furies as an act of mercy, or disintegrating into ash after a final confrontation, acknowledging his mistakes.
As a Fury, Sannan possesses supernatural physical capabilities, including enhanced strength, speed, and the ability to heal from wounds rapidly. However, these abilities are fueled by a maddening thirst for blood, and their use accelerates his cellular decay, shortening his life. Before his injury, he was a skilled swordsman, proficient in a style of Japanese swordsmanship. Despite his physical power as a Fury, his greatest ability remains his sharp intellect, which he applies to his relentless, and often tragic, scientific pursuits.
