Description
Tokimaro Ryūga is a character from the 2023 animated film Kitarō Tanjō: Gegege no Nazo and its extended version, the Shinsei-ban. He is a member of the Ryūga family, a powerful and secretive clan that serves as the primary antagonists of the story. Tokimaro is depicted as one of the sons of the family patriarch, Tokisada Ryūga. His appearance is distinctive and traditional; he dresses like an ancient Shinto priest, which marks him as an unusual figure even among his eccentric relatives. He is often seen talking to a portrait of his deceased father, a behavior that other characters find strange and unsettling.
Within the family hierarchy, Tokimaro is initially presented as the next successor to lead the Ryūga clan after his father's death. This decision, however, is not without contention. His role in the story is crucial as a catalyst for the central mystery. Shortly after being named the heir, Tokimaro is murdered, an event that traps the main characters, the salaryman Mizuki and the yōkai Gegerō (Kitarō's father), within the family's secluded village. His death, occurring in the midst of a succession dispute, transforms the family gathering into a closed-circle mystery, forcing the protagonists to investigate the growing number of bizarre deaths.
Due to his early demise, Tokimaro’s personal motivations and personality are not explored in great depth. He is largely defined by his position as the heir and his eccentric, somewhat detached demeanor. His primary relationship is with his family, particularly as a son of the patriarch Tokisada and a sibling to other members like Katsunori. The naming convention of the family heads, including Tokisada, Tokimaro, and his nephew Tokiya, follows a theme, all sharing the element "Toki". The character does not have a significant development arc, as his death serves to drive the narrative forward for the remaining characters. He does not demonstrate any notable supernatural abilities; his importance is purely narrative and political within the story of the Ryūga clan's downfall.
