TV-Series
Description
Dantalion, also known as the professor, is a Crimson Lord who appears in Shakugan no Shana III (Final). He is a tall, thin figure with a disheveled appearance, characterized by long, unkempt hair, thick glasses, and a white coat wrapped in belts around his body. He typically hangs various items such as notebooks, rosaries, and binoculars from his neck. His body possesses unusual flexibility, allowing him to twist his upper body one hundred eighty degrees, stretch his arms, and even transform his hand into a robotic manipulator. His true name is Seeking Researcher, and his flame is a foolishly faded green.

Dantalion embodies the archetype of a mad scientist who lives for research, experimentation, and invention concerning both the human world and the Crimson Realm. He is willing to risk anything, including his own life, for the sake of his work. This singular obsession makes him indifferent to the consequences of his actions or the alliances he forms. He does not care whether he works with Denizens, humans, or even Flame Haze, as long as the collaboration serves his curiosity. He is known to consider even his ruined plans to be successful from a scientific perspective. This personality makes him a troublesome genius and an oddity, even among the Denizens of Bal Masqué, where he is disliked and distrusted by many of its members.

His primary motivation is the relentless pursuit of knowledge, focusing on the systems and interactions between the two worlds. He does not care about the outcomes of grand schemes for their own sake but rather for the experimental opportunities they provide. He becomes visibly flustered when someone interferes with his experiments, revealing a personal investment that is otherwise absent from the larger conflicts.

In the story of the final season, Dantalion serves as a key asset for Bal Masqué, primarily in the creation of powerful artifacts and magical devices. He is the original creator of The Silver and a prototype version of the Fūzetsu seal. Following the return of the Snake of the Festival, he assists in the god's plan to create a new world, Xanadu, by building the tower necessary to initiate the Grand Order. He is also put in charge of the tower's defenses, for which he creates numerous large explosive robots.

Dantalion's key relationships are largely defined by his reputation and his peculiar mannerisms. He is generally hated by most Denizens, including his allies in Bal Masqué, because he conducts research on his own people and his past experiments are responsible for creating some of their greatest enemies, the Flame Haze. Among the Trinity, Sydonay hates him, and Bel Peol does not like or trust him, referring to him as a fool who is only clever. However, Hecate seems to be close to him, even calling him uncle and protecting him from getting into trouble with higher-ups. He harbors a particular hatred for the Flame Haze Seere Habichtsburg, a past human test subject who reminds him of his experimental failures. He also dislikes shiitake mushrooms.

Throughout the series, there is no significant character development for Dantalion; he remains consistently driven by his scientific curiosity from his introduction to his demise. He continues his work on the Tower of Xanadu and its defenses during the final battle. His end comes when the Flame Haze Seere Habichtsburg sends one of his own robot attacks back at him. As his escape device has been deactivated by another, this explosion kills both Dantalion and his assistant, Domino.

Dantalion is an ancient and powerful Crimson Lord with a sharp and inventive mind. He possesses several notable abilities. He can materialize a peculiar substance called Material, which is typically useless scrap. The Gordian Knots are made from a type of Material known as Demigold. His signature creations are known as Crystallizations of Self-Research, inventions made by combining a substance from the human world with a Material. Without exception, these inventions are numbered and given the name Excellent.
