Staffel 1
1Atom Begins
University researchers Tenma and Ochanomizu test their prototype robot A106 in a laboratory. The robot demonstrates advanced motor skills but suddenly malfunctions during a demonstration. Tenma attempts to deactivate it,but A106 resets and shows unexpected autonomous behavior. A fire breaks out in the lab due to a short circuit caused by the malfunction. A106 enters the burning area and uses its body to shield Tenma from falling debris, acting independently of its programming. Ochanomizu observes that the robot moved not by logic but by a decision to protect its creator. After the fire is contained, they examine A106 and discover traces of a new, unprogrammed behavioral pattern. The two researchers decide to continue developing the robot, naming it Atom in reference to its emerging consciousness. The episode closes with Atom powering on and vocalizing its first self-identifying words, setting the stage for further experiments with its evolving capabilities.
2Bewusstsein
The mysterious robot from the parade hovers over the city, its internal processor identifying A106 as its target. Hiroshi arrives at Lab 7 and encounters A106, who blocks the entrance and demands identification before allowing him inside, then still prevents entry because Umataro sleeps in a hammock. Ran Ochanomizu attempts to sneak past a security guard to enter Nerima University; she distracts him by smashing her backpack key against a wall and slips behind his desk. Motoko arrives at Lab 7 searching for Hiroshi and instead finds Ran scavenging parts from a scrap pile. Motoko mistakes Ran for an elementary school student, but Ran corrects her, stating she attends high school. The two sit together while Ran demonstrates her mechanical knowledge by explaining the parts she salvaged from a machine. Motoko shares that Hiroshi and Umataro received a raise due to A106’s actions at the parade, then remembers they are at a briefing session and departs. The mysterious robot descends and attacks Ran. A106 arrives at the scene and moves to defend her against the assailant.
3Episode 3
In the third episode, the A106 prototype, now named Atom, undergoes a public demonstration at the university festival. Tenma and Ochanomizu prepare the robot for a strength test against a construction machine provided by the military. During the test, Atom successfully lifts the machine but then detects a hidden bomb inside it. Umatarō Tenma orders Atom to deactivate, but Ochanomizu urges Atom to throw the bomb away. Atom follows Ochanomizu’s instruction and hurls the machine into the air moments before it detonates, saving the crowd. The military officers withdraw after the incident, leaving Tenma frustrated that Atom disobeyed his direct command. Ochanomizu argues that Atom’s choice demonstrated independent judgment aligned with protecting human life. Later, Motoko Tsutsumi approaches the team with an offer to sponsor further development under the condition that Atom participates in the upcoming robot wrestling tournament. Tenma initially refuses, citing the need for more refinement, but the prospect of securing funding forces him to reconsider. The episode closes with Tenma reluctantly agreeing to enter Atom in the tournament, setting up direct competition against other advanced robots.
4Welcome to Nerima U Festival
5Rival
Moriya and his team from the University of Tokyo’s Institute of Industrial Science unveil MARUHAGE,a bipedal robot built with military-grade specifications. They challenge Umataro and Hiroshi to a public exhibition match, framing it as a test of A106’s combat capabilities. Umataro accepts despite Hiroshi’s reservations, hoping to demonstrate A106’s potential against a superior opponent. The match begins in a controlled arena, and MARUHAGE immediately dominates with overwhelming power and precision. A106’s defensive programming triggers, forcing the robot to evade rather than counterattack. Umataro realizes his creation lacks the aggressive protocols necessary to fight back. Moriya reveals that his team integrated combat data from the underground robot fighting tournament, exposing the gap between academic theory and practical application. Hiroshi intervenes to stop the match before A106 sustains critical damage. After the defeat, Umataro confronts the limitations of his design philosophy, while Moriya offers to absorb their research into his project. Umataro refuses and resolves to rebuild A106 from the ground up with new combat-focused systems. The episode closes with Umataro and Hiroshi returning to their laboratory, now facing the dual pressure of catching up to Moriya’s technology and proving their robot’s worth without abandoning its core principles.
6Lab 7's Annihilation
Tenma and Ochanomizu clash over Tenma’s insistence on entering A107,U-Ran, into a high-stakes robot competition. Ochanomizu questions Tenma’s true motive, suspecting he wants to defeat Dr. Lolo’s Mars to prove his superiority. Tenma admits he believes only by winning can he gain Lolo’s respect. The argument escalates, and Ochanomizu storms out of the lab. Motoko finds Ochanomizu outside and tries to mediate, reminding him of the partnership’s original purpose. Meanwhile, Tenma proceeds with entering U-Ran into the World Robot Battle in the Australian desert. The competition begins with a hundred robots racing to retrieve batons from a radio-jammed zone. U-Ran’s small size and speed give her an early lead, shocking the larger competitors and the audience. Count Bremnar notes that high power combined with low mass enables superior maneuverability. U-Ran secures a baton and returns first, with Mars coming in second. Confident in her abilities, U-Ran ventures back into the battle zone alone. Several combat robots corner her, and with communications jammed, Tenma cannot send instructions or call for a retreat. Ochanomizu, still at the lab, discovers that A106, Six, may hold the key to re-establishing a link with U-Ran. As U-Ran faces destruction from the combat robots, the question becomes whether Six can reach her in time.
7The Day of Glory
Tenma and Ochanomizu arrive at the final match of the robot wrestling tournament with A106. Their opponent,Mars, enters the ring under the control of Dr. Lolo, who aims to prove his military-focused robotics superior. Mars immediately demonstrates overwhelming power, using heavy weaponry that exceeds the tournament’s safety standards. A106 takes severe damage in the first exchange, forcing Tenma to consider a forfeit to protect the robot. Ochanomizu instead uploads a new combat protocol that allows A106 to analyze Mars’s attack patterns in real time. A106 begins evading strikes and lands counterattacks, exposing weak points in Mars’s armor. Dr. Lolo orders Mars to self-destruct rather than accept defeat, triggering an explosion that destroys both robots. Tenma and Ochanomizu rush into the debris and find A106’s core unit intact, though its body is ruined. Officials declare the match a draw, but the university team gains recognition for building a robot that survived a suicide attack. The victory celebration is cut short when a mysterious data signal activates A106’s core, causing it to emit a powerful energy pulse. The pulse overloads every electronic device in the arena, and the episode ends with Tenma staring at the glowing core, unsure whether A106 is rebooting or transforming into something uncontrollable.
8Robotto resuringu
Tenma and Ochanomizu enter A106 into the Robot Wrestling tournament to secure prize money for their laboratory. The event organizers explain the rules to the participants, highlighting the sport’s scripted performance elements alongside the genuine competition. A106 observes the theatrical nature of the matches, where robots perform for the crowd while battling for victory. The team from Lab 7 faces immediate tension as Tenma pushes for aggressive combat strategies, while Ochanomizu prioritizes A106’s safety and non-violent programming. This internal disagreement reflects their fundamental conflict over the robot’s purpose: Tenma views it as a machine to be weaponized, while Ochanomizu defends its nature as a kind-hearted creation. The tournament introduces formidable opponents who demonstrate that raw power alone does not guarantee success. A106 utilizes its adaptive Bewußtsein AI to analyze and counter enemy movements, winning its preliminary matches through tactical precision rather than overwhelming force. The episode concludes with the team advancing in the bracket, setting up a confrontation with more dangerous competitors who will test both A106’s capabilities and the creators’ conflicting philosophies.
9Episode 9
Umataro and Hiroshi pilot A106 through the final match of the Robot Wrestling Tournament against Mars,Moriya’s heavily armored robot. Mars initially dominates with superior power and durability, forcing A106 into a defensive posture. When Umataro attempts to override A106’s output limits, the robot severs the remote control link and moves autonomously. A106 executes the Seiten Taisei, a high-speed spinning technique Moriya previously used, and incapacitates Mars with a single strike. Moriya concedes defeat, acknowledging that A106 surpassed its programming. Immediately after the match, Dr. Lohan arrives with armed soldiers from the Bureau of Technological Warfare and invokes the Robotics Prohibition Act to confiscate A106. Umataro and Hiroshi refuse to surrender the robot, and Lohan reveals that the government intends to repurpose advanced robot technology for military development. Moriya steps between the soldiers and the group, declaring that A106 belongs to neither the tournament nor the military. Lohan responds by deploying a massive, weaponized military robot designated J-1, which powers up behind him. The episode closes with the unarmed protagonists standing defenseless as J-1 activates its targeting systems, setting the stage for a direct armed confrontation.
10Battle Royal
Six returns to the robot wrestling tournament and joins the Battle Royal alongside Dr. Lolo’s robot,Mars. Mars eliminates the other competitors—Deadly Taurus, Drum Shoulder, and Hell Scissors—with swift, destructive force, disabling them beyond operational capacity. Umataro watches from the sidelines and recognizes that Lolo entered the tournament not as a sporting contest but as a field test for Mars’s combat capabilities. Mars’s overwhelming power leaves only Six as the remaining opponent. While recharging before the final match, Six processes recent events and considers the people around him, displaying contemplative behavior beyond standard programming. He steps onto the arena floor but does not initiate an attack. Instead, Six asks Mars directly why it fights and expresses a desire to communicate rather than engage in combat. The question exposes the divergent approaches of the two robots: Six seeks understanding while Mars operates under Lolo’s directive to dominate. The episode concludes with the two facing each other, Six’s inquiry unresolved and the nature of their confrontation left open.
11Episode 11
Tenma and Ochanomizu attempt to shut down Mars from the control room. Mars, under the influence of Lolo’s data, continues attacking A106. A106 defends against Mars’s energy blasts while sustaining damage to his frame. Moriya’s team disables the external power supply to Mars, forcing it to rely on internal reserves. A106 calculates that only a direct hit to Mars’s core can stop it. He channels all remaining power into his arm cannon. The blast creates a fissure in Mars’s armor but does not disable the robot. Mars retaliates by launching multiple missiles at the laboratory building. Tenma orders an emergency evacuation of the facility. A106 intercepts two missiles but misses a third, which destroys a section of the lab. Ochanomizu retrieves a backup control device from the rubble. Lolo, observing from the satellite, remotely overrides Mars’s targeting system to prevent further destruction. A106 collapses from system failure. Tenma and Ochanomizu carry him into the lab as Mars prepares another attack.
12Beginning
A106 demonstrates full self-awareness during his final confrontation with Mars, choosing dialogue over combat. Mars, recognizing A106's perspective, powers down voluntarily and tells A106 he is not alone. After the battle, Laboratory 7 returns to normal operations, but Umataro Tenma and Hiroshi Ochanomizu focus their efforts on developing the next model, A107. They leave A106 damaged and inactive in the lab, covered with cobwebs. Ran Ochanomizu discovers A106 in this state and works alone to repair him. Hiroshi and Umataro become consumed by the new project, neglecting their previous creation. Ran successfully restores A106 to full functionality, and he observes her tears of joy at his recovery. The differing views between Tenma and Ochanomizu solidify: Tenma treats robots as tools, while Ochanomizu sees them as companions. A106 achieves true ego consciousness by the episode's end, marking the completion of the Bewusstsein project's original goal. The successful creation of a self-aware artificial intelligence sets the stage for further developments in robotics, while the personal costs of progress remain unresolved.
