Description
Kyora is a powerful demon and one of the main antagonists of the fourth InuYasha film. He is a member of a group known as the Shitōshin, or the Four War Gods. This group, which includes his brothers Ryura, Jura, and Gora, invaded the island of Hōraijima many years ago. The island was a sanctuary where humans and demons lived in harmony, but the Four War Gods devastated its population.

In terms of his background, Kyora is a bird daiyokai, a great demon, and has lived for millennia. He has a pale complexion with long, wavy red hair and matching red eyes, along with pointed ears. Like all the War Gods, he bears a mark on his forehead that is the center of his power. His name, which means misfortune, is fitting for his cruel nature.

Kyora’s personality is marked by a profound arrogance and a love for violence. He considers himself a god and expects to be treated as such, reacting with indignation when his power is questioned. While he can appear calm, civilized, and almost feminine in his demeanor, this is a deceptive front. Beneath the surface, he is sadistic and ruthless, driven by a sheer love of fighting and killing. Unlike many demons who only attack when provoked or hungry, Kyora actively seeks out humans to destroy, viewing them as weak beings that should be eradicated. He is obsessed with battling strong opponents and becomes singularly focused on defeating them when he encounters one. In this way, he shares certain traits with Sesshōmaru, particularly his contempt for weakness and his lust for killing, though Sesshōmaru himself regards Kyora with cold disdain.

Kyora's primary motivation is the recovery of his full power and the freedom to leave Hōraijima. Long ago, the island's priestess, Lady Kanade, sealed the Four War Gods' power spheres inside a jeweled comb box and cast it into the Cauldron of Resonance, a magical furnace that generated a time barrier around the island. Without their spheres, the War Gods cannot leave the island, as they would slowly fade away and die. To survive, they discovered they could regain a portion of their power by throwing the island's half-demon children into the cauldron, a practice they sustained for ages. Kyora and his brothers are driven by the need to retrieve the comb box from the cauldron to break their imprisonment and reclaim their former glory.

In the story of the film, Kyora serves as a primary antagonist with a significant personal history tied to Sesshōmaru. He is the one who, two hundred years before the film’s main events, gave Sesshōmaru the Mark of the Four War Gods. This happened during a confrontation where Kyora, after easily defeating two other demons, fought Sesshōmaru. Although Sesshōmaru was able to land a powerful blow that set Kyora ablaze, the War God regenerated and used his fire birds to mark Sesshōmaru as a distraction before escaping. He did this deliberately, knowing that Sesshōmaru would one day come seeking revenge, ensuring they would meet again. Kyora eagerly awaits this rematch and ultimately lures Sesshōmaru back to Hōraijima for their final battle.

Key relationships define Kyora’s role. His primary and most significant relationship is with his nemesis, Sesshōmaru. Kyora is obsessed with fighting the powerful dog demon, seeing him as a worthy opponent and even commenting on their similarities in their love of killing. This rivalry is the central personal conflict for Kyora. He also has a strong bond with his fellow War Gods, Jura, Ryura, and Gora, acting as a cohesive unit with them in their goal to terrorize and rule. He also claimed the Crimson Demon Fan as his weapon after defeating its previous owner, Kujaku.

Kyora’s development within the film is limited, as he is a static villain whose sole purpose is to be a powerful obstacle. He does not undergo a significant change in character. However, his role in the story is to provide a direct challenge to Sesshōmaru’s strength and to showcase the power of the Four War Gods. His final confrontation with Sesshōmaru results in his defeat. Using the dragon strike technique with his sword Tokijin, Sesshōmaru destroys Kyora, marking the end of their long-standing rivalry.

Kyora possesses a range of notable abilities, most of which are associated with fire. He has regenerative powers, allowing his body to transform into a fiery vortex and restore itself after sustaining serious injury. He can also teleport across great distances in a similar manner. His primary weapon is the Crimson Demon Fan, a stolen weapon that allows him to create powerful fire tornadoes to hurl at his enemies. With this fan, he can also summon a swarm of birds made entirely of fire, which he uses for distractions or ambushes; anything they touch bursts into flame. Another of his techniques is called Red Lightning, which lets him create dark clouds that strike targets with red bolts of lightning. As a bird demon, he has the natural ability of flight. Kyora is a very powerful demon, being one of the few capable of withstanding an extended fight against a daiyokai like Sesshōmaru. His character and fire-based powers are symbolically linked to the Vermilion Bird of the South, one of the Four Sacred Animals of Chinese mythology, which is a phoenix-like creature.
