First-year high school student Ai Yasumi lives on Izu Oshima, a small island south of Tokyo. Her life revolves entirely around reading manga, and her greatest joy is escaping into the worlds created by her favorite artist, the reclusive and long-inactive mangaka Hoshi no Rei. When she learns that Hoshi no Rei will be making a rare appearance at the COMITIA doujinshi event in Tokyo, she makes the journey to the mainland. At the convention, Ai is shocked to discover that her idol is actually her own strict and unsupportive teacher, Ms. Teshima. This fateful encounter becomes the catalyst for Ai's dream to become a manga artist herself, forcing her to navigate the painful yet joyful path of creating her own stories.

The story follows Ai as she returns to her island and, with the help of her supportive friend Akafuku, forms a manga club at Oshima Minami High School. She is soon joined by Fujimori, a talented artist she met on the day of the convention, who initially serves as a rival before becoming a close ally. Together, they begin the painstaking process of learning to draw, developing plots, and meeting deadlines. The narrative explores the vast gap between loving manga as a reader and the grueling reality of producing it as a creator. Central to the drama is Ai's complex relationship with Ms. Teshima, who agrees to mentor her on the condition that Ai prioritizes her schoolwork and keeps manga creation as a hobby, a rule that Ai constantly struggles to obey.

Set against the backdrop of the volcanic island of Izu Oshima, the series balances quiet, atmospheric scenes of daily life with the high-energy pressure of artistic creation. As the members of the manga club compete in contests and face the anxieties of rejection and self-doubt, the story builds through key narrative arcs focused on their first submissions to publishers and their experiences at major manga conventions. The anime adaptation, directed by Hiroaki Akagi and produced by Shin-Ei Animation, is set to premiere in 2026.
