Description
Natsue Awayuki is the wealthy wife of Kaoru Awayuki and the mother of his two daughters, Mawata and Mayune. She is a powerful business executive who runs a large cosmetics company and, after her marriage to Kaoru, many of the town’s businesses came to be named after the family. She first fell in love with Kaoru when she was young, adoring his shojo-genre romance novels, and later married him after the death of her first husband. Natsue even named her two daughters after the twin princess characters in Kaoru’s favorite book, Twin Princesses.

In her public life and in most of her interactions, Natsue maintains a strict and dignified decorum, presenting herself as a composed, authoritative figure. She reserves her gentle, softer side exclusively for Kaoru, with whom she shares a deeply affectionate and openly loving relationship. This duality defines her personality: outwardly formal and demanding, yet privately warm and devoted to her husband.

Her role in the story is primarily as a stepmother to Himeno Awayuki, the protagonist. Himeno’s widowed father remarries Natsue, uprooting Himeno from her previous life into a world of wealth and high society. Natsue is initially distant and strict with Himeno, though in the anime adaptation she shows a degree of care and concern for her stepdaughter’s wellbeing, unlike the manga where she is more jealous and aloof. Over the course of the series, Natsue’s relationship with Himeno develops from one of formality to genuine familial affection, culminating in her and the rest of the family risking their safety to help rescue Mawata during the final conflict.

As a character, Natsue does not possess any supernatural abilities. Her influence comes from her wealth, social standing, and her unwavering support for her family. Her key relationships include her loving marriage to Kaoru, her protective bond with her daughters Mawata and Mayune, and her evolving connection with Himeno, whom she eventually accepts fully as part of the family. Natsue’s development is subtle but meaningful: she grows from a strict, emotionally guarded matriarch into a more openly caring mother figure, demonstrating that her stern exterior belies a deep loyalty to those she loves.
