Description
Grace O'Connor is initially presented as a calm, gentle, and capable manager for the pop idol Sheryl Nome, hailing from the distant Macross Galaxy fleet. This composed and professional demeanor, however, masks a profoundly cold and calculating nature. Her true personality is ruthless and power-hungry, driven by a grand ambition for galactic domination rather than any genuine care for those around her. Her entire outward persona is a fabrication designed to manipulate Sheryl, and later the singer Ranka Lee, as unwitting pawns in a much larger scheme.
Grace’s background reveals a deep history with the central conflicts of the story. Prior to the events on the Macross Frontier, she was a scientist working on the 117th Long Distance Research Fleet under the legendary Dr. Mao Nome. It was there that she researched the V-Type Infection, a deadly disease linked to the alien Vajra. She survived the destruction of that fleet in a Vajra attack, an incident she herself may have provoked. Later, she became a central figure in a conspiracy originating from the Macross Galaxy fleet. Her ultimate goal is to seize control of the Vajra's powerful fold communication network, a galactic-scale neural net, and use it to subjugate all of humanity. She plans to embed fold crystals into every person, forcing them under her control and establishing herself as the unquestioned ruler of the galaxy.
In the story, Grace plays the role of a hidden mastermind and chief antagonist. She begins as Sheryl's trusted manager, but her manipulations run far deeper. She secretly operates as the superior officer to the enigmatic cyborg pilot Brera Sterne, whom she uses as a brainwashed enforcer. After orchestrating a devastating incident on the planet Gallia 4 that seemingly claims her life, she transfers her consciousness to a new cybernetic body and resurfaces, dropping Sheryl to become Ranka Lee’s new manager to exploit the girl’s unique connection to the Vajra. Her machinations drive much of the conflict, as she works from the shadows to guide events and the Vajra themselves toward a final, decisive battle where she intends to achieve her apotheosis.
Her key relationships are defined by exploitation. With Sheryl Nome, she is the architect of the singer’s entire fabricated career, having raised and conditioned her from childhood to be a test subject and a tool. While she may have developed some reluctant affection for Sheryl over the years, she ultimately discards her when a more powerful asset emerges. Ranka Lee is this new asset, viewed purely as the key, or "Little Queen," to unlocking and controlling the Vajra network. Brera Sterne is her puppet; she withholds the truth of his past and activates a "slave mode" in his cybernetics to ensure his total obedience. Her alliance with the politician Leon Mishima is one of convenience, based on shared goals, and it ends in mutual betrayal.
Grace’s character sees a notable shift in the movie adaptation, "Macross Frontier: The Wings of Farewell," where she is portrayed as a more caring and tragic mother figure to Sheryl, with her villainous actions being partly influenced by external control. In the television series, her development follows a more straightforward arc of a villain's rise and fall. After merging her cybernetic consciousness with the Vajra Queen, she becomes drunk with power and launches an all-out assault on the Frontier fleet and even Earth itself. Her control is eventually broken by the combined power of Sheryl and Ranka’s songs, and she is ultimately killed by the pilot Alto Saotome.
Grace’s notable abilities are a direct result of her near-total cybernetic modification. Her real body is almost completely synthetic, allowing her to interface directly with any computer system, communicate telepathically with her co-conspirators across the galaxy, and even alter her physical appearance, including her gender, hairstyle, and voice, at will. Her most powerful ability is the backing up and transfer of her consciousness; if one body is destroyed, she can instantly upload her mind into one of many hidden duplicate bodies, making her extremely difficult to permanently kill. She is also a highly skilled pilot, capable of flying a customized VF-27γ Lucifer variable fighter.
