Description
Approximately 20,000 years before the main events, planet Earth faced imminent ecological collapse from catastrophic environmental degradation. To save the planet, a group of humans triggered an "Overdrive" process. This transformation converted Earth into Mother, a colossal, planet-sized entity revered across the cosmoses as the Goddess of the Cosmos.
Mother manifests as a humanoid woman of planetary scale. She possesses long cyan hair and five jewels adorn her head. Her body appears clad in a skintight suit patterned in white, light blue, and grey. Her eyes remain closed in most depictions. She is typically portrayed reclining on a throne formed from planetary bodies.
Mother sustains all life within the Grand Shiki Cosmos by supplying Ether, a fundamental energy, to both humans and machines. Her existence prevents universal decay; her disappearance causes humanity's extinction, followed by the gradual depletion of Ether reserves for machines over 20,000 years. Mother wields reality-warping abilities, including the power to grant any wish, exemplified by fulfilling Xiaomei's desire for omniscience. She can also bestow unique powers through wishes, such as gifting Xiaomei with time-oracle abilities. Her capabilities extend to ether manipulation, cosmic awareness, and memory alteration.
Mother observes the universe, specifically monitoring Shiki Granbell's journey. She reveals the Grand Shiki Cosmos was created as a sanctuary for Shiki, the sole survivor of Earth's original destruction. Due to their intrinsic connection, she appoints Shiki to decide her fate. By the series' climax, Mother is near death and presents Shiki with a critical choice: restore her to full power, which would erase all individuals who perished in alternate universes (including Shiki himself), or allow her demise, dooming all life to eventual extinction.
Shiki rejects both outcomes. Instead, he utilizes the Chronophage, a time-devouring entity, to revert Mother to her original planetary state. This action resets Earth without erasing the lives preserved in Universe Zero. Mother accepts this resolution, acknowledging Shiki’s role in her restoration. Her association with Xiaomei, later revealed as the sentient form of Earth’s Moon, underscores her cosmic significance, as Xiaomei’s existence is intrinsically linked to hers.
