Description
Gamlin Kizaki is a prominent character in the Macross 7 story, serving as an ace pilot for the elite United Nations Spacy squadron known as Diamond Force. He is approximately eighteen or nineteen years old during the main events and holds the rank of second lieutenant, later being promoted. His journey is defined by a strict military upbringing, a deep sense of duty, and a gradual transformation as he encounters ideas and people who challenge his rigid worldview.
Gamlin's background is rooted in a childhood tragedy that set the course for his life. The defining memory of his youth was standing at his father's funeral, where his attention was drawn away from the ceremony by the sight and sound of jet fighters soaring into the sky. This moment inspired him to join the UN Spacy academy at a very young age. He was a gifted and dedicated cadet, becoming a protégé of the legendary Zentradi ace and veteran of Space War I, Milia Fallyna Jenius. Under her rigorous training, he excelled, and upon graduation, he was assigned to the elite Diamond Force unit, piloting a advanced VF-17 Nightmare variable fighter.
In terms of personality, Gamlin is the model of a disciplined and dedicated soldier. In combat, he is extremely competent, maintaining focus in stressful situations and following his instincts as an ideal pilot for a special forces unit. He is fiercely loyal to his comrades in Diamond Force, taking the loss or injury of any member very personally. However, outside of battle, his personality is markedly different. Having spent most of his formative years in military training, he is shy, socially awkward, and overly formal in his interactions with others, always using polite and distant language even with friends. This formality extends to his approach to romance, which he sometimes treats with the same seriousness as a military exercise, leading to humorous situations.
Gamlin's motivations and role in the story are heavily influenced by two key relationships. The first is with Basara Nekki, the charismatic and unconventional singer of the rock band Fire Bomber. Basara is a civilian pilot who intrudes into military battles not to fight, but to sing at the enemy. For the disciplined Gamlin, this is a baffling and infuriating disruption of military order, and he initially regards Basara as a reckless rival. This rivalry is complicated by a shared connection to Mylene Flare Jenius, the bassist of Fire Bomber and the youngest daughter of Gamlin's former instructor, Milia. Milia, who is also the mayor of City 7, plans for Gamlin to marry Mylene. While Mylene is initially apprehensive, she and Gamlin become good friends, and he soon falls in love with her. However, Mylene has a complicated crush on Basara, creating a romantic triangle that fuels Gamlin's initial animosity toward the singer.
As the story progresses, Gamlin undergoes significant development. His initial frustration with Basara's pacifism and battlefield singing gives way to grudging admiration for the man's incredible piloting skills, which surpass his own. More importantly, he slowly begins to respect Basara's philosophy and cause when he witnesses the tangible, positive effects of his music in combat against the mysterious and powerful Protodeviln. This evolution marks a turning point for Gamlin, as he learns to "loosen up" and become less formal in his daily life. He accepts that winning Mylene's heart is a challenge, admitting his jealousy that she shines brightest when singing with Basara. His friendship with her encourages him to embrace a life beyond strict military protocol. This growth culminates in moments where he defies orders based on his own conscience, and even sings a Fire Bomber song himself in a crucial moment to revive Basara, demonstrating how far he has come from the rigid soldier he once was.
Regarding notable abilities, Gamlin is universally recognized as an exceptionally skilled variable fighter pilot. His abilities were honed at the academy and he was personally selected by Milia Jenius for the elite Diamond Force, flying the powerful VF-17 Nightmare. He is a capable close-quarters combatant in addition to his piloting skills. His proficiency, however, is largely limited to latter-generation fighters; he experiences difficulty when piloting an older model like the VF-1J Valkyrie, which he feels is underpowered compared to what he is used to. Despite his social awkwardness, he learns to be a strong leader, eventually becoming the captain of Diamond Force with a new mission to protect City 7.
