Description
Ivane Geperuniti is the supreme leader of the Protodeviln, an ancient and powerful race of energy beings who consume the spiritual energy known as Spiritia. His physical presence in the story is primarily through a possessed human body, that of Ivano Günter, a fleet advisor for the U.N. Spacy. This possession occurred during an expedition to the fourth planet of the Varauta system, where the spirits of the Protodeviln were discovered and inadvertently released. The human form of Geperuniti is androgynous, characterized by a slim figure, long blonde hair, a high-pitched voice, and lips that appear as though they have dark lipstick applied. While this appearance has led to confusion, the character is unequivocally male.
As the leader of the Protodeviln, Geperuniti is a calculating and patient strategist, driven by a singular, long-term goal: to create an everlasting Spiritia Farm. This plan involves corralling humans and Zentradi to be kept as a stable source of Spiritia, which would eliminate the need for hunting and, most critically, prevent the formation of another devastating Spiritia Black Hole, a catastrophe caused by the uncontrolled consumption of Spiritia in the past. He views other Protodeviln, including powerful figures like Gigile, Sivil, and Gravil, as largely expendable assets in achieving this ultimate ambition.
Geperuniti's role in the story is that of the primary antagonist and master strategist. He learns that the singing of Anima Spiritia, particularly the band Fire Bomber, can cause humans to rapidly regenerate their Spiritia. To exploit this, he orchestrates a grand trap, luring the Macross 5 and Macross 7 fleets to an Earth-like planet with the intention of imprisoning them there for harvesting. He commands the brainwashed forces of the Varauta Army, which are primarily composed of the survivors of the Megaroad-13 expedition who fell under Protodeviln control. His key relationships are defined by his authority over his fellow Protodeviln and his opposition to the protagonists of Macross 7, especially the singer Basara Nekki, whose power he seeks to control and exploit.
Throughout the series, Geperuniti displays notable psychic abilities, using them to suppress Basara Nekki's voice or counter the telekinetic powers of the Protodeviln Sivil. His development culminates in the final episodes, where his true form, a massive tentacled monstrosity, emerges. By feeding on Anima Spiritia, this form begins to grow out of control, becoming the very Spiritia Black Hole he had sought to avoid. In a pivotal transformation, the power of song, specifically the performance of "Try Again" by Basara Nekki and Sivil, reaches him. This causes Geperuniti to join in singing, and he experiences a profound realization, discovering the joy of creating his own Spiritia from within rather than consuming it from others, a phenomenon he calls Spiritia Creation. Satisfied by this new revelation, he ceases his attack, calls off his forces, and ultimately decides to leave the galaxy with the remaining Protodeviln to seek Spiritia elsewhere.
