Description
Klein Sandman is the enigmatic commander of the secret Earthgertz organization and the mastermind behind the super robot Gravion. His true background is that of Zieg Zeravire, a scientist from the ecologically dying planet of Llambias. In an effort to save his world and prevent a war with the neighboring planet Selias, he created the Genesis Machine Gran Sigma to restore Llambias' environment. His work was sabotaged by his brother-in-law, Hugi Zeravire, who created the genocidal Genocidron System. During a confrontation between the two, Sandman accidentally destroyed the system’s control device, causing the automated weapons to run rampant and indiscriminately destroy both worlds. Carrying the weight of this catastrophe, Sandman fled to Earth with his trusted aide Raven. There, he adopted the appearance and identity of an eighteenth-century aristocrat named Klein Sandman to hide his alien origins. He further genetically enhanced his own G-Factor, a unique genetic trait that governs tolerance to gravitational forces, granting himself functional immortality and preserving his youthful appearance for centuries.

As a leader, Sandman is calm, calculating, and rarely openly emotional. He maintains an air of mystery and operates from the palatial Saint-Germain Castle, which hides the vast technological infrastructure of Earthgertz. His primary motivation is redemption. He feels a deep responsibility for the Zeravire threat, which actually originated from his home world, and is determined to prevent Earth from suffering the same fate as Llambias. This drive fuels his grand scientific efforts and his careful selection of pilots, whom he recruits based on their high G-Factor. In Gravion Zwei, he steps out of the shadows of command to become a direct combatant, personally piloting the Gran Sigma mecha in battle.

His relationships are central to the story. Sandman serves as a father figure to Touga Tenkuuji, whom he raised within the castle and trained from childhood to pilot the core unit of Gravion. He recruits the hot-headed Eiji Shigure, partially for his exceptional G-Factor and partially because he believes Eiji’s worldly nature will help Touga develop a broader understanding of humanity and the world he is fighting for. He shares a deep, trusting bond with Raven, who is his most loyal operative and confidante. A significant personal revelation is the arrival of his daughter, Leele Zeravire, of whose existence he was unaware until her spacecraft followed him to Earth. He also created Eina as a Proto Gran Diva, an artificial being designed to support the Gravion system, further showcasing his scientific reach and paternal care.

Over the course of the series, Sandman develops from a shadowy and distant benefactor into a more openly vulnerable and involved leader. In Gravion Zwei, his tragic origins are fully revealed, which clarifies the nature of the conflict and humanizes him immensely. He transitions from pulling strings behind the scenes to standing on the front lines with his pilots, trusting them with the full truth of his past. His notable abilities combine scientific genius, the strategic mind of a military commander, an immortal lifespan, and the physical capacity to handle extreme G-Forces as a highly capable mecha pilot.
