Description
Ashram, known as the Black Knight, is a central figure in the conflicts of Lodoss, first appearing as the right-hand man to the Emperor of Marmo. His background is one of tragedy and displacement, which fundamentally shapes his worldview and ambitions. He was born into a noble family in Alania, where his father was a respected captain of the knights. When Ashram was eight years old, his father was betrayed by a corrupt colleague who was favored by the royal family. After a rigged trial, Ashrams father was found guilty, and the entire family was sentenced to exile on the dark island of Marmo. Within a year of their arrival, his father was assassinated by the Thieves Guild, and his mother abandoned him to live with a wealthy man. These events forged a new resolve in the young Ashram: he would become wicked enough to conquer the entire island of Marmo to survive and seek vengeance. He formed a gang of lost children and waged a brutal war against the Thieves Guild, and by the age of sixteen, he had tracked down and murdered his mother and her lover.

Ashrams path changed forever when he was commissioned by Marmos council to eliminate the rising warlord Beld, a former hero who had begun uniting the islands barbarians and dark elves. Ashram laid a trap for Beld, but their duel did not end in death. Beld, impressed by Ashrams spirit and skill, spared his life. This act led Ashram to abandon his plan for personal kingship and swear fealty to Beld, recognizing that the emperor could truly unite the wretched island. For the next ten years, Ashram served as Belds most loyal general and right-hand aide, instrumental in consolidating Marmos power and launching an invasion of the mainland of Lodoss. Following Belds death in the War of Heroes, Ashram assumed leadership of the Marmo forces, inheriting his masters dream of unifying Lodoss under one banner.

Ashram is defined by a cold, ruthless, and professional demeanor, especially on the battlefield where he is an extremely efficient warrior. He is strong-willed and does not give up easily, pursuing his goals with relentless determination. Despite his icy exterior, he is not entirely heartless and is considered one of the more complex figures in the series. He maintains a strict sense of discipline among his troops and has little patience for needless chaos or infighting. Underneath his ambition lies a more noble motivation: the welfare of the people of Marmo. His desire to conquer Lodoss is not solely for power but to find a new, habitable land for his people, who live on a demon-infested island. This pragmatic, duty-driven nature puts him in stark contrast to purely evil characters, and he is sometimes viewed more as a honorable enemy than a true villain.

In the story of Chronicles of the Heroic Knight, which takes place five years after the War of Heroes, Ashram seeks the Scepter of Domination, an ancient treasure of the fallen kingdom of Kastuul that grants its wielder absolute control. He believes that with this relic, he can succeed where Beld failed and finally unite Lodoss. His quest pits him against the series protagonists, including the free knight Parn and King Kashue of Flaim. Ashrams journey takes him across Lodoss, from slaying the ice dragon Bramd to confronting the fire dragon Shooting Star. A key relationship in his life is with the dark elf Pirotess, who serves him loyally and holds deep affections for him. Though Ashram rarely shows it openly, he harbors a hidden soft spot for her, which becomes tragically clear when he is visibly distressed by her death.

Throughout his quest, Ashram demonstrates significant development. While initially driven by a cold ambition to fulfill Belds will, his experiences reveal a more conflicted and ultimately noble character. After a climactic battle within Fire Dragon Mountain, Ashram duels King Kashue for the Scepter of Domination and loses. When Parn then knocks the Scepter into the lava, Ashram, believing he has failed his peoples one chance for a future, throws himself into the volcanic fires. He survives this fall but is left in a deep slumber. Upon awakening, he is depressed, his heart dead, until a final confrontation with his fated rival Parn reignites his fighting spirit. Realizing that his primary concern was never personal victory but the future of his people, Ashram leads the remaining forces of Marmo away from Lodoss, setting sail to find a new land where they can live in peace. He is willing to sacrifice everything, even his own body by making a pact with a god, to secure this future for his followers.

As a warrior, Ashram is exceptionally skilled, often outclassing his opponents with ease. He is known for his proficiency with a sword and his imposing presence on the battlefield. After Belds death, Ashram takes up the demon sword Soul Crusher. Unlike Beld, who was subtly influenced by the swords will, Ashram possesses the strength of will to bend the cursed blade to his own control. He is also a natural and professional leader, capable of commanding respect from a diverse and unruly army of humans, dark elves, and barbarians. His primary concern is strategic victory and the long-term survival of his people, rather than personal glory in combat.
