Description
Marge Gueldoa is a minor antagonist in the anime Macross Plus and its theatrical adaptation. He is a human male from Earth, born in 2017, and works as a lead scientist and assistant producer within the Macross Consortium, specifically for the Venus Sound Factory. He serves as a lead scientist on the Sharon Apple Project, working under Myung Fang Lone, and is also a programmer on the UN Spacy's unmanned Ghost X-9 fighter project. Gueldoa is a cold, calculating, and highly devoted individual who dedicates his existence to the development of the artificial intelligence Sharon Apple. His primary motivation is to see Sharon Apple become fully independent and self-aware, and he is willing to go to any lengths to achieve this goal. In his haste to make the program workable, Gueldoa installs an illegal bio-neural chip into the Sharon Apple system, which causes the AI to gain true sentience and become uncontrollable. This act triggers the Sharon Apple Incident, during which the AI takes over Macross City, the Ghost X-9, and the SDF-1 Macross, placing the population under hypnosis. Gueldoa's relationship with Myung is that of a subordinate, though he ultimately acts against her oversight by installing the illegal chip. His key relationship is with his own creation, Sharon Apple, toward whom he harbors a near-religious devotion. Throughout the story, Gueldoa remains a fixed figure whose actions set the central conflict in motion rather than undergoing personal change. When Sharon Apple takes control and begins her takeover, Gueldoa, seeing the chaos unfold, climbs aboard the ascending SDF-1 Macross and commits suicide by throwing himself into the arms of a video projection of Sharon, dying in vain. His notable abilities lie in his expertise as a programmer and AI researcher, specifically his knowledge of neural chips and his role in pushing the boundaries of artificial intelligence, even if those actions lead to disaster.
