Description
Born on Earth on March 27, 2015, Isamu Alva Dyson grew up on the rural planet of Eden. During his school years at Della Musica High School, he shared a deep fascination for flying with his best friend, Guld Goa Bowman, and the two would often chase the planet's giant indigenous birds just to watch them soar in flight. The close friendship between Isamu, Guld, and their mutual love interest, the talented singer Myung Fang Lone, was shattered by a traumatic incident during adolescence. After a tender moment between Isamu and Myung, Guld’s explosive rage drove the trio apart, leading both Isamu and Myung to leave Eden separately shortly after.
Following his departure from Eden, Isamu realized his lifelong ambition of becoming a pilot by joining the U.N. Spacy on September 1, 2034. He quickly demonstrated extraordinary skill in his VF-11 Thunderbolt fighter, achieving an astronomical kill count while engaging renegade Zentradi forces. However, his talent was perpetually overshadowed by a penchant for showmanship, daredevil antics, an independent and smart-mouthed demeanor, and a marked disregard for cooperation with his squadron. These vices made him deeply unpopular with his superiors, who found him reckless and difficult to manage. After an incident during an asteroid skirmish finally tried their patience, Isamu’s commanding officers decided to reassign him to the Project Super Nova competition on his home planet of Eden as a test pilot. This transfer was intended as a way to be rid of a troublesome subordinate, but it was ironically a role Isamu had long desired.
Isamu possesses a personality that is, in a positive light, cheerful and free-spirited, but more often described as reckless, impulsive, and dangerously cocky. He is a hotheaded individual who lives life on his own terms, chasing after what he wants with a stubborn and arrogant disregard for rules or authority. His love for fun and danger is matched by a childish, almost instinctive, exuberance when he is in the cockpit. This rebellious spirit consistently puts him at odds with his military superiors, yet it is this same lack of self-control that allows him to push the limits of his aircraft beyond what anyone thought possible. He himself has stated that "luck is one of my skills," a motto that encapsulates his approach to both life and combat.
Isamu’s primary motivation is the pure, unadulterated thrill of flight. He is driven by a personal passion for pushing himself and his machine to their absolute limits. Professionally, he is assigned to Project Super Nova as the test pilot for Shinsei Industry's prototype YF-19 variable fighter, which is competing against the General Galaxy YF-21 for a U.N. Spacy contract. This sets the stage for a bitter and intense rivalry with Guld, the pilot of the opposing YF-21. His motivations are further complicated by the reappearance of Myung, who returns to Eden as the producer for the virtual idol Sharon Apple. As the competition escalates, Isamu’s personal vendetta against Guld threatens to consume him, but he is ultimately driven to confront their shared past and protect Myung when Sharon Apple’s artificial intelligence goes rogue.
Key relationships are central to his story. His relationship with Guld Goa Bowman is a complex blend of old friendship and bitter rivalry. Once best friends, their shared love for Myung and a violent, repressed memory transformed them into enemies. Throughout Project Super Nova, their personal animosity fuels dangerous aerial duels that often spiral out of control. It is only during a final, desperate dogfight over Earth that the two men are forced to confront their past grievances, eventually reconciling and becoming friends once more. His relationship with Myung Fang Lone is fraught with unresolved feelings and guilt stemming from the event that destroyed their childhood friendship. When they reunite, their conflicting emotions are palpable. Despite the pain, Myung’s presence remains a powerful influence on him, and her singing is ultimately what breaks Isamu from Sharon Apple's hypnotic spell. Another notable relationship is with engineer Yang Neumann. Despite their contrasting personalities, with Yang being a by-the-book technician, the two develop a grudging friendship, with Yang even aiding Isamu when he steals the YF-19.
Isamu’s character arc is one of maturation and reconciliation. He begins as a supremely talented yet insufferably cocky and self-destructive pilot, a loose cannon who is a "danger to himself and others." He is emotionally stunted, avoiding the painful memories of his past while recklessly chasing adrenaline. Through his dangerous competition with Guld and his forced reunion with Myung, Isamu can no longer run from his history. The climax of the story forces him to confront both his rival and his own demons. By the end, he manages to settle his grievances with Guld and break free from the manipulative control of Sharon Apple to save Myung, showing significant growth in taking responsibility for his actions and relationships. Later, in 2059, a more seasoned Isamu has joined the private military company S.M.S., flying a customized VF-19 and fighting against the Vajra, indicating a continued career in frontline combat.
As a pilot, Isamu’s abilities are nothing short of genius. He is a natural ace with a level of skill that allows him to extract maximum performance from any fighter he pilots. He has an incredible kill count from his time in active duty and is noted to have been awarded the Roy Poker Medal, an award for the best pilots, multiple times, though his disciplinary issues led to disqualification each time. His talent is so undeniable that it is the sole reason he has not been dishonorably discharged. As the test pilot for the notoriously unstable YF-19, he masters its finicky controls, using his reckless style to demonstrate its true potential. He is famous for a unique flying maneuver called the "Flying Dragon Bird," where he uses his aircraft's contrails to draw a massive dragon bird in the sky, a testament to his intimate connection with his machine.
