Description
Millard Johnson is a colonel and the station commander of the New Edwards Test Flight Facility, where he oversees Project Super Nova, the competition between the YF-19 and YF-21 variable fighters. He is a no-nonsense, pragmatic officer with a sharp intuition, often aware of the undercurrents among his personnel before they become overt problems. Rather than confronting issues directly, he tends to manage or manipulate situations behind the scenes, a tactic that reflects both his experience and his preference for maintaining order without unnecessary confrontation. He frequently tries to mediate the intense feud between test pilots Isamu Alva Dyson and Guld Goa Bowman, offering Isamu advice that usually only irritates the headstrong pilot. Millard's own past as a pilot is hinted at; when Isamu steals the YF-19 to intervene in the Ghost X-9 demonstration, Millard remarks that he used to steal planes himself and decides to cover for both Isamu and Guld, just as his own superiors once did for him. This decision reveals a layer of loyalty and understanding beneath his stern exterior. Throughout the story, Millard serves as a steady, authoritative presence who keeps the larger project on track while allowing the two rival pilots room to work out their personal history, ultimately supporting their actions when the unmanned Ghost X-9 threatens the value of manned fighters. His notable abilities lie in his strategic oversight, his intuitive reading of people, and his capacity to make quick, pragmatic decisions that advance both the project and the safety of those under his command.
