Description
Gokū Fūrinji is the central protagonist of the cyberpunk action series Goku: Midnight Eye. A 33-year-old former police detective who now works as a private investigator in a futuristic version of Tokyo, his life changes dramatically after he investigates a string of mysterious suicides involving his former colleagues from the police force. During his probe into a powerful and corrupt businessman, Gokū is forced to stab out his own left eye to break free from a hypnotic attack that would have led to his own death. This extreme act of self-mutilation saves his life but causes him to crash his car into the sea.

After this incident, he awakens in an unknown location where a mysterious, unseen benefactor has saved him. This entity, intrigued by Gokū's fierce will to live and his act of self-sacrifice, replaces his lost eye with a powerful cybernetic implant called the "God's Eye". This artificial eye is, in essence, a super-computer terminal that allows Gokū to access, interface with, and hack any computer or digital network on the planet, from a simple traffic light to the most secure military satellite systems. The same benefactor also provides him with a seemingly simple staff or bō that can extend to incredible lengths at his command, fire powerful energy blasts, and be used as a weapon or a vaulting pole. Armed with these incredible tools, the full extent of which is known only to him, Gokū returns to the city to finish his investigation and confront the forces that tried to kill him.

In terms of personality, Gokū Fūrinji embodies the quintessential hard-boiled detective. He is characterized as being fearless, cynical, and possessing a dry, sarcastic wit. He has a distinctly macho and confident demeanor, carrying himself with a swagger that is reflected in his unorthodox fashion sense, which typically consists of a leather blazer and tie worn over his bare chest without a shirt. Despite his gruff exterior, he operates by his own moral code, using his god-like power over the world's computer systems to fight crime and bring down powerful wrongdoers. While he has the capability to, for instance, launch the world's nuclear arsenals, he refrains from doing so, as he has no interest in wanton destruction. He enjoys the company of women and has many brief romantic encounters, but a recurring tragic irony in his life is that the few women he truly falls for often meet with untimely and violent ends. His motivation is driven by a desire for justice, vengeance for his fallen friends, and a general unwillingness to back down from a challenge.

Within the story's narrative, Gokū serves as a powerful and proactive force who takes on cases that often lead him into conflict with powerful criminals, shadowy organizations, and individuals with their own advanced cybernetic enhancements. His role is that of a lone wolf avenger, using his unique abilities to cut through the complexities of futuristic crime. Key relationships in his life are often defined by tragedy. His former police partner and friend, Tamiya, is one of the first victims of the mysterious suicides that set the plot in motion. Another crucial figure is Yoko, a strong-willed female police officer with a history connected to Gokū, who is also targeted by the same conspiracy. His interactions with these characters highlight his protective instincts and his inability to save everyone close to him. Gokū's character development is best understood not as an emotional or psychological journey, but as an evolution from a skilled, yet ordinary, detective into a near-invincible, technologically empowered force. The acquisition of the God's Eye and the extending staff fundamentally transforms his capabilities, turning him from a pursuer of criminals into a cybernetic superbeing able to single-handedly challenge and dismantle powerful, organized enemies. The mysterious source of his power remains largely unexplained, and he does not seek answers about his benefactor, instead pragmatically accepting his new abilities and using them to pursue his own goals.

His most notable ability is, of course, the God's Eye. This implant allows him to process visual information with superhuman speed and accuracy, providing real-time data analysis of his surroundings. Its primary power, however, is its ability to interface with any computer system, giving him total control over the digital world around him. He can deactivate security systems, gather intelligence from global networks, and manipulate the environment to his advantage. Complementing this is the extending staff, a versatile weapon that connects to his artificial eye for control. It grants him immense offensive power, incredible reach, and a unique method of high-speed transportation, allowing him to pole-vault across vast distances. These two pieces of technology, combined with his existing skills as a hardened detective and his fearless, confrontational nature, make Gokū a formidable and almost god-like figure in his futuristic world, even if he uses his powers for relatively simple, grounded goals.
