Akane Mishima is a second-year student at Seitetsu Gakuin High School, where she works as a librarian and is recognized as an honor student. In her daily life, she is shy, quiet, and soft-spoken, often misinterpreting others’ words and actions as having a sexual meaning. This timid exterior conceals the fact that she is a Blue Kämpfer, chosen to participate in the conflict roughly half a year before the main events begin. Her messenger is a cynical plush toy known as the Black Seppuku Rabbit. When she activates her Kämpfer powers, she undergoes a radical transformation: she becomes aggressive, foul-mouthed, and trigger-happy, losing her glasses as her short brown hair grows longer and turns crimson, while her eyes shift to red. In this form, she wields a single handgun based on the M1911.45 caliber pistol, which has unlimited ammunition and never needs reloading, and she appears to be ambidextrous. Despite her harsh exterior, she is fiercely loyal and protective of her partner. Akane’s primary motivation is her loneliness and her growing romantic feelings for Natsuru Senō, the first male friend she has ever truly had. She becomes intensely jealous whenever Natsuru talks about another girl, especially his crush Kaede Sakura, or when anyone else shows interest in him. Her low self-esteem is highlighted by a moment when she is willing to kiss another person just to pretend it is Natsuru. Over time, she becomes more assertive even in her normal form, such as forcing Natsuru to go on a date with her, while her loyalty to her friends and her commitment to protecting Natsuru remain constant.
