Description
Natsuko Aki, often called Nat-chan, is a central supporting character throughout the Cutie Honey franchise. Her background, personality, and role vary considerably depending on the adaptation, though a few constants remain: she is Honey Kisaragi’s closest friend and, in most versions, her roommate at the all‑girls St. Chapel Academy. In the original 1970s manga and the first anime series, Natsuko is a teenage schoolgirl with short brown hair and freckles. Her cheerful, energetic demeanor makes her a dependable companion, and she provides emotional support for Honey without possessing any supernatural abilities. The original manga portrayed her as having a romantic crush on Honey, a detail that was removed from the television adaptation.
In later iterations, Natsuko’s role changes dramatically. In the Re: Cutie Honey OVA, she appears as a lead investigator for the National Police Security Task Force Branch 9. Here she is cold, controlling, and a strict perfectionist. Despite her exceptional competence as a police officer and expert markswoman, she has a tendency to get in over her head. She dresses almost exclusively in black, lives alone in a small apartment, and conceals her natural beauty with non‑prescription eyeglasses. Privately, she enjoys drinking Japanese sake and, when intoxicated, enthusiastically sings karaoke. Her professional drive is to bring the criminal Panther Claw organization to justice, and she initially views the vigilante Cutie Honey with suspicion. Over time, she learns Honey’s true identity and becomes a reluctant but loyal ally, wrestling with the conflict between her strict belief in law enforcement and her desire to protect her friend.
Other adaptations show further variation. In Cutie Honey Flash, Natsuko is again a schoolgirl and best friend to Honey, but with a more typical boy‑crazy teenage personality and no romantic tension between them. In several versions, including the original 1970s story and Cutie Honey Universe, she meets a tragic end at the hands of Panther Claw. Regardless of the incarnation, Natsuko’s defining trait is her unwavering loyalty to Honey, whether as a supportive classmate or a hardened detective.
