Charle, also known as Carla, is an Exceed, a race of small, cat-like beings from the parallel world of Edolas. Her origins trace back to this world, where she was born as the daughter of Queen Shagotte, making her a princess of the Exceeds. As an egg, she was sent to Earthland by her mother, and upon hatching, she was discovered and raised by the young Dragon Slayer Wendy Marvell within the Cait Shelter guild. This event forged a lifelong, unbreakable partnership between the two, who would later become prominent members of the Fairy Tail guild. After the guild's temporary disbandment, Charle and Wendy spent a year with Lamia Scale before she ultimately aided in the reconstruction of Fairy Tail.

In terms of appearance, Charle is a small, white-furred Exceed with pink inner ears, brown eyes, and two distinct whiskers on each cheek. She is often seen wearing a pink bow on her tail and a variety of outfits, typically featuring a mustard-yellow and red top with a pink bow tie. Using her Aera magic allows her to sprout angelic wings for flight. A significant milestone in her development is learning transformation magic, which grants her a humanoid teenage form with shoulder-length white hair, cat ears, and her signature ribbon-adorned tail.

Personality-wise, Charle stands in stark contrast to her fellow Exceed, Happy. She is characterized by her serious, strict, and emotionally reserved demeanor, often keeping her true feelings in check. Her most defining trait is her fierce, maternal instinct to protect Wendy Marvell, whom she sees as her primary charge and closest friend. She frequently scolds Wendy for her shyness and obstinacy, acting as a voice of reason and a guardian. Initially, Charle was aloof and dismissive towards the more rambunctious members of Fairy Tail and openly rejected Happy's persistent romantic advances. However, witnessing Happy's bravery and dedication during the Edolas arc caused her to soften, leading to a warmer relationship with the guild and a mutual, affectionate bond with Happy that is built on care and trust. She has a known fondness for Darjeeling tea.

Charle's primary motivation throughout the story is the safety and well-being of Wendy Marvell. This drive is complicated by her background, as she struggles with the emotional burden of her mission as an Exceed and a prophecy regarding the destruction of their homeland, Extalia. This internal conflict reaches its peak during the Edolas arc, where she is forced to confront her preordained fate. Ultimately, she defiantly rejects this destiny, choosing instead to protect her home through unity and resilience alongside her newfound family in Earthland. Her role in the story is that of a crucial support member for Wendy and the Fairy Tail team, providing strategic insight, aerial transport, and emotional grounding.

Charle's notable abilities are distinct and valuable. She can fly using Aera magic, a skill she can use to carry at least one passenger, and can perform aerial attacks. As a descendant of Queen Shagotte, she wields the rare power of precognition, allowing her to foresee future events. This ability is involuntary and has activated during key story moments, and it grows even more potent when she assumes her humanoid form. In her transformed state, her magical and combat capabilities are enhanced, including hand-to-hand skills such as her signature White Moon dropkick. Throughout the series, she participates in numerous guild conflicts, including battles against the Oración Seis and during the 100 Years Quest, where she has temporarily assumed a Yokai form called Suiko.
