Maya operates within a narrative defined by the ancient conflict between spirit yōkai and demon yōkai. This struggle has a violent history, though a swordsman once taught both sides a non-lethal form of combat. After the spirit yōkai were defeated and sealed, their leader Nurarihyon foresaw that a future battle would require a human child to serve as supreme commander. He tasked Maya with finding a suitable candidate.

She locates Jin Kenzaki, a human who practices sports chanbara, and becomes involved in his attempt to save a friend who was transformed into a demon yōkai. Maya believes yōkai and humans exist in a relationship of mutual support between their worlds. She receives an offer to join the demon yōkai faction, though her precise reaction remains undocumented. Her actions center on aiding Jin as he confronts the demon yōkai to break the curse, guided by Nurarihyon’s instruction that Jin must "cut the darkness from his heart" to succeed.
