Description
Kanon Ozu is a supporting antagonist in the anime Coppelion and a key figure among the genetically engineered survivors known as Coppelions. She is introduced as a member of the "Clean-up crew," a unit that defects to align with Division 1, a rogue faction of JSDF survivors intent on spreading radioactive contamination across the world.
Physically, Kanon is depicted as a slim teenage girl with blonde hair and red eyes. Her standard attire consists of a white blouse with a blue ribbon bow tie, an orange cardigan, and a blue skirt paired with brown high-heeled boots. In colder conditions, she adds a brown coat, dark red mittens, and a red plaid scarf to her outfit.
Kanon is the elder twin sister of Shion Ozu. Her personality is notably reckless, sadistic, and tenacious, often displaying an eerie smile in combat. Unlike her more overtly manic sister, Kanon tends to be quieter, more serious, and arguably more "sane" than Shion, though she shares a deep-seated cruelty. The source of this sadistic behavior is rooted in her genetic origin; both twins are clones of a famous actress who was later revealed to be a serial killer, a trait that was inadvertently replicated in them. Despite their volatile relationship and instances where Kanon has used Shion as a human shield, the twins share a genuine bond, and Kanon has expressed a fierce determination to protect her sister no matter the cost.
The core motivation driving Kanon's antagonism is her existential despair. She and her sister defected after she accidentally overheard a conversation between Haruto and Onihei revealing that Coppelions were not designed to live long and that their deaths would be instantaneous once their predetermined time expired. This knowledge instilled in her a profound hatred for humanity, whom she believes created them as disposable tools or "dolls." Her goal shifts from mere survival to revenge, seeking to ensure that humans face destruction so that the Coppelions can become the dominant race.
In the story, Kanon and Shion serve as direct antagonists to the protagonist, Ibara Naruse. They leverage their specialized combat training, which is more advanced than that of rescue units, to hinder the protagonists' mission. Their strategy includes spreading barrels of radioactive waste to increase contamination levels across the city. Kanon's role culminates in a final confrontation on a departing train, where she attacks with complete indifference to her own life. However, after being defeated and then saved by Ibara and other humans working together, she undergoes a significant development, witnessing kindness that changes her perspective and ultimately leads her to join the protagonists' cause.
Kanon possesses notable abilities derived from genetic modification. Her DNA was spliced with that of an electric eel, granting her the capacity to generate and emit powerful electrical discharges from her body as a weapon. This power also allows her to sense ions from people's bodies within a range of one kilometer. This ability comes with distinct weaknesses and limitations. Water presents a significant danger, as she risks electrocuting herself upon contact. Overusing her electrical powers causes internal injury, preventing her from using them repeatedly without consequence. Furthermore, because electricity constantly runs through her body, she experiences a pervasive numbness that means she does not perceive pain normally. This constant electrical flow also causes her body to glow faintly in darkness.
