Description
A Misanthrope Teaches a Class for Demi-Humans is a 2026 anime television series based on the light novel series of the same name by Natsume Kurusu, with illustrations by Sai Izumi. The story centers on Rei Hitoma, a licensed high school teacher whose career was cut short by a traumatic incident that left him with a profound disdain for humanity. After spending several years as a reclusive NEET, he comes across a job listing for a teaching position at a remote all-girls school, seeking an educator with genuine dedication to their students. Compelled to apply, he is hired and soon discovers that the institution is a special facility for demi-humans, animals and spirits who aspire to become fully human. He is assigned to the advanced class, where his students are not human but rather beings striving to join the species he claims to hate. The series follows this self-proclaimed misanthrope as he navigates the challenges of teaching a class of demi-human girls, including a mermaid, a werewolf, a rabbit, and a bird, all while confronting his own damaged worldview. The setting is a rural, almost mysterious school environment, far removed from the urban society Rei has rejected. As the teacher helps his students work toward their goal of humanity, the narrative also explores his own gradual healing and the possibility that he might learn as much from them as they do from him. Notable narrative arcs include Rei learning the specific reasons behind each student's desire to become human, such as a mermaid's dream to be a dancer or a werewolf struggling with a dual personality. The series also delves into Rei's past trauma, explaining the events that made him a misanthrope, and features graduation assignments that test the students' readiness to integrate into human society. Later episodes introduce new demi-human students joining the class, including a dragon, and explore their unique challenges, as well as field trips that provide the students with direct exposure to the human world they wish to join.
