Natsume Kurusu
Description
Natsume Kurusu is a Japanese creator known for originating the light novel and manga series A Misanthrope Teaches a Class for Demi-Humans. In addition to her work as a writer, Kurusu is a VTuber affiliated with the agency Nijisanji, where she has been active since her debut in December 2019.
Kurusu made her debut as a published novelist through an unconventional path. She participated in a project organized by fellow Nijisanji member Amamiya Kokoro titled Let's Become Nijisanji Literary Masters! on the Nijisanji Minecraft server. The short story Kurusu wrote for this project caught the attention of an editor from MF Bunko J, leading to an offer for a full publication. This opportunity resulted in her first light novel, A Misanthrope Teaches a Class for Demi-Humans, which was released by KADOKAWA under the MF Bunko J imprint on February 25, 2022. The first volume became a commercial success and was quickly reprinted.
The light novel series is written by Kurusu Natsume and illustrated by Sai Izumi. As of February 2025, four volumes have been published. The story follows Rei Hitoma, a former teacher in his thirties who has become a recluse due to past trauma involving human relationships. He accepts a teaching position at Shiranui Private High School, a unique institution where non-human girls, including a mermaid, a werewolf, a rabbit, and a bird, study to learn how to live as humans. The series explores themes of social alienation, personal healing, and the meaning of humanity through the lens of a self-professed misanthrope gradually opening up to his demi-human students.
The work has been expanded into a manga adaptation illustrated by Atsu Benino, which began serialization in Kadokawa Shoten's Monthly Shōnen Ace magazine in August 2022. The manga is published in English by Yen Press. The light novel series is also licensed for English release by Yen Press under its Yen On imprint.
A television anime adaptation of A Misanthrope Teaches a Class for Demi-Humans has been announced and is scheduled to begin airing in January 2026. The anime is directed by Akira Iwanaga and produced by the animation studio asread. Kurusu has stated that she is actively assisting with the anime production as the original author. This adaptation marks a significant milestone in her career as a creator, bringing her debut work to a wider audience.
As a VTuber, Kurusu Natsume is known for her love of music and sheep, with her fan symbol being a lamb and a musical note. Her character design was created by UNI. She is recognized for being among a growing number of VTubers who have successfully transitioned into traditional publishing and media franchises, demonstrating the increasing crossover between online content creation and the mainstream anime and manga industry. Her debut novel's journey from a Minecraft server writing project to a full anime series represents a notable path within contemporary Japanese media production.
