TV-Series
Description
Miss Monochrome is an android, or gynoid, who operates on a single AA battery. She appears as a teenage girl with light gray hair styled into twin tails and blue eyes. Her outfit consists of a white breastplate with an attached choker, a white skirt with a black-and-white check pattern, and boots. She often wears boxing gloves and a hair ornament. Miss Monochrome originally debuted as a virtual singer and was conceived as a villain who sought to drain all color from the world, but she abandoned that goal and instead focused on becoming a successful idol.

Her backstory reaches far into the past. She existed since an ancient human civilization that was destroyed by an alien invasion. During that era she was an idol alongside a rival, with whom she made a promise that they would become idols together again after the rival was reborn. Her rival was killed in the invasion, and Miss Monochrome waited for centuries in the same spot for the reincarnation to appear. Over time she forgot the reason for her vigil. When she saw the popular idol Kikuko on television, who resembled her lost rival, Miss Monochrome felt an intense urge to become an idol again and sing alongside Kikuko, even though she no longer consciously remembered the original promise.

In the present day of the series, she lives in a white, high‑tech castle with her robotic companion Ru‑chan. Her former manager, Mana, betrayed her by stealing her entire fortune of 19.3 billion yen and disappearing. Homeless and wandering the streets, Miss Monochrome collides with a man named Maneo, who dreams of managing an idol. She decides that to become an idol she must first have a manager, so she hires Maneo and begins working a part‑time job at a convenience store to support her goal.

Her personality is marked by a lack of human emotional expression; she speaks in a flat, mechanical tone and often fails to understand social cues. Despite this, she is earnest, determined, and capable of feeling gratitude. Her catchphrase is “Motto mae ni detai!” which means “I want to get out more!” or “I want to step forward more!” She is single‑minded in her pursuit of idol stardom, frequently dragging those around her into her schemes. Though she lacks natural charisma due to her android nature, her straightforward and honest approach gradually helps her make progress toward her dream.

Key relationships include Maneo, the aspiring manager who supports her; Ru‑chan, her loyal robot friend; Kikuko, the successful idol who serves as both her inspiration and her unconscious link to the past; and Mana, the untrustworthy former manager who stole her money. Over the course of the series, Miss Monochrome slowly develops a deeper understanding of human emotions and social interaction while continuing to strive for the top of the idol world. She possesses no supernatural abilities, but she can sing and perform, and her android body gives her enhanced durability. When her battery is inserted backwards, she briefly transforms into a male android named Mister Monochrome.
