Description
Ran Wakato is a character from the comedic manga and anime series High School! Kimengumi. She is introduced as a new teacher at Ichiou High School, where she serves as the homeroom teacher for the main characters, including the members of the Kimengumi.

Coming from a wealthy and sheltered upbringing, Wakato is described as a beautiful woman from a good family, but she notably lacks common sense and is quite naive about the world. This sheltered nature is central to her personality; she is easily flustered and overwhelmed, particularly by the bizarre appearances and antics of the five-member Kimengumi. Her most prominent character trait is a tendency to faint or cower in fear when confronted with their unusual faces and strange behavior. For instance, on her first encounter with the group, she is so shocked that she hides behind her desk.

Despite her initial frailty, Wakato's role in the story often highlights her earnest desire to be a competent teacher. She is motivated to overcome her weaknesses and do her job well, which frequently involves trying to maintain order in her chaotic classroom. Her lack of real-world experience, however, makes this a significant challenge. Her background is further emphasized in a storyline where she attempts to compete with a wealthy, haughty student named Oda Mari by wearing an elaborate, frilly Victorian dress to school, as she felt her standard uniform was too plain in comparison.

Wakato's primary relationships are with her students, especially the Kimengumi, whose mere presence is her biggest obstacle. Her interactions with them, as well as with students like Oda Mari, serve as catalysts for her personal growth. Through these often ridiculous situations, she learns important, albeit humorous, lessons, such as the value of not judging others by their appearance. Her development is subtle, centered on her gradual, often unsuccessful attempts to build resilience and face the daily chaos of her classroom without losing consciousness.

Wakato's most notable ability, played for comedic effect, is her extraordinarily weak constitution when it comes to anything bizarre. She has a near-instinctual physical reaction of fainting or collapsing when faced with the strange faces of the Kimengumi, a gag that recurs throughout the series. This physical comedy defines her early appearances and marks her as a new authority figure who is completely unprepared for the school's reality.
